ACAO forest 🌹
#christmastrip
ACAO FOREST is a facility consisting of 13 unique theme gardens on a vast hilly area of 650,000㎡ with a stunning view of the Sagami Bay. You can enjoy 4,000 roses of 600 kinds, seasonal flowers and herbs with the Atami blue sea and sky behind it.
The design supervision and planting methods of this garden is handled by landscape designer Nobuo Shirasuna. Perennial plants such as foxgloves and lupines play a supporting role for the roses growth, so they are usually planted together.

A person who wants to see some nature to escape their busy cities should visit Akao Herb and Rose Garden.
If you are in Shizuoka, Atami City will surely appear in your radar. After all, Atami City is a popular city during Summer because of its beaches. However, once a person is in Atami City, you will only hear about their famous Onsen 温泉 (Hotsprings). After all, that’s what Atami is most popular for. When I went to Atami, I decided to stay there for 1 whole day (read here: A Day in Atami), so I had the time to tour the city. I did not expect to find a huge, and I say hugeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, garden housing variety of flowers, trees, and many cafes. The place is called Akao Herb and Rose Garden (アカオハーブ&ローズガーデン).

Atami believes that it is no stranger to many small partners who like Japan's deep freedom. It is located in the northeast of the Izu Peninsula, next to the sea.
April to June each year, the Akao Herb Rose Garden in Atami is a paradise for flowers. This rose garden is on the hill, and you can take a minibus to the top of the mountain to see the endless blue ocean. All the way down, you can walk slowly. Everywhere you are surrounded by colorful flowers, the variety of roses accounts for the vast majority. It is a good place for little fairies to take pictures and is really super beautiful!
There is also a super beautiful design coffee shop and net red card seascape swing, and there is a lavender ice cream and rose products souvenir shop under the mountain.

View of the beach at night
#2024wish
The sandy beach is lit up at night, making visitors enjoy a view like a tropical resort. The beach is opened for swimmers every year from the second Saturday of July to August 31.
Swimming is allowed from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the above-mentioned swimming period. The beach is lit up every night from the sunset to 10:00 p.m.
In 2024, I want to go night swimming with my friends.
Atami Sun Beach
#2024wish
This beach is one of the main attractions in the immediate area around Atami Station, and for good reason. While man made, you can have a taste of what you would experience on a tropical island or perhaps the French Riviera. Services are limited and there are no food stalls, so it is better to arrive prepared. In the case of need, the highway running along the beach is lined with various shops and restaurants catering to a beach going crowd.
I want to travel to Cambodia in 2024.

Unlike all the other castles that I’ve been to before, Atami Castle doesn’t really have a huge gallery. It only houses many miniatures and paintings of castles all around Japan, some traditional artifacts, and some old paintings of ancient Japan’s porn. *laughs* However, those are not the things you would like to experience in Atami Castle. What you definitely want to see in Atami Castle is the view of Atami City from the high vantage point.

Atami Hanami
#cherryblossom2024
Atami Castle, towering 120 meters above Sagami Bay, looks very ancient. However, although the creators were inspired by the architecture of the Momoyama period (1568-1600), this is one of the newest castles in Japan: it was built in 1959. Anyway, the view from the castle is simply magnificent, and tourists definitely have something to see.
How to get there
At Atami Station on the JR Tokaido Line, take the Yuyu Sightseeing Loop sightseeing tour bus and drive to Atami Castle.
After getting off the ring bus at the Marine Spa Atami stop, use the Atami cable car: from the upper station to the castle it is only a few minutes on foot.
Modern building
Unlike other Japanese castles, Atami is not a historical building. It was built in 1959, during the period of the tourist boom, and has always served only for the entertainment of tourists.
Nevertheless, the castle is a fairly accurate copy of those that were built during the Momoyama period, at the end of the XVI century. Therefore, it fits perfectly into a number of original buildings of that era, such as the castle in Osaka.
Panoramic view
Today, Atami Castle is a universal tourist attraction, where a variety of objects of Japanese culture are presented: from a collection of samurai costumes from the Edo period to an exhibition of erotic prints in the Ukiyo—e style.
The exposition dedicated to the castles of Japan and their history is a tribute to the historical "ancestors" of the Atami.
The real highlight of the castle is the view from the top floor of Sagami Bay. It becomes especially fascinating in the spring, when the cherry blossoms bloom. Sakura blooming here is esecially charming! However, it is also good idea to come here in the summer, during the famous Fireworks Festival.
The most beautiful cherry blossoms in eastern Shizuoka are all here (from late March to early April)
Eastern Shizuoka, Izu Peninsula,
as if you were in an ocean of cherry blossoms, with pink petals fluttering down, picturesque and poetic.
As the spring breeze passes, under the cherry trees, a romantic pink is left behind. A gentle breeze stirs, and amidst the cherry blossom rain, it's like a dreamy fairyland.
Immersed in it, the soul is purified, forgetting the troubles and disturbances of the mundane world. Each cherry blossom is a masterpiece of nature, each view a gift from the great outdoors. In this ocean of cherry blossoms, let your heart drift with the wind,
and in the fragrance of the flowers, appreciate the beauty and brevity of life. Listen quietly,
to the blossoming and falling of the flowers, feel the passage of time, and taste the cycle of life.
The Izu Peninsula, where the cherry blossoms bloom, is the yearning for the beauty of the soul, and also a portrayal of life in full bloom.

Atami Onsen Town Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Let’s catch the umi in Atami ~
This shopping street is located right at Atami station, Shizuoka prefecture. Atami is only 1.5 hours train ride/ 50 minutes Shinkansen ride away from Tokyo station. There are many food stores to explore and good food to feast on! There are also a lot of places to dine in with the spectacular sea view~ It is also an ONSEN town where people would usually stay the night to enjoy a nice ONSEN ryokan~
#celebratewithtrip
Atami City is a city by the sea. It prides itself with its scenic view of its sea landscape. It is greatly known by people of the neighboring cities as a city of Onsens and Seafoods. After spending a day there, I can definitely attest why I agree to the biases of the people on this city because it definitely deserves the popularity it has.
Starting from Onsens, to gardens, to castles, seafoods, omiyage, and many more, Atami City has it all. It is also a known jump off point to people who need to transfer to bullet trains and the likes because of how big Atami Station is.

Atami Onsen is very famous all around Japan. In order to make sure you spent your trip right, you definitely should soak into one of the Atami Onsens.
One of the must-try Onsens in Atami is the Nikkou-Tei Oo-Yu. Why? Because this Onsen is historical! The famous Tokugawa Ieyasu is said to have bathed into this very Onsen. This is the main reason why I chose to visit this Onsen above all the others.

Atami Plum Garden Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Atami Plum Garden
#2024wish
Atami Baien, or Plum Garden is one of the best gardens in Japan. It is well-known for its early blooming trees but has both mid and late bloomers so the blossoms can be enjoyed over a long period. Within the grounds there is a man-made waterfall that you can walk behind and view the garden and a wooden bridge through the water., There is also the Sawada Seiko Memorial Museum, Korean Garden and Nakayama Shinpei Memorial Hall. Sawada was a well-known sculptor and painter from the Atami area and Nakayama was a songwriter. Entrance fee to the park is 300 yen but if you are a resident of Atami or staying at one of the hotels/ryokans, then it is just 100 yen. If you plan on visiting the Museum of Art (very worthwhile), keep your ticket stub since this will give you a 300 yen discount on the entrance fee.
I want to travel Atami again in 2024.

The Atami Plum Garden is located 10 minutes on foot from JR Kinomiya Station, served by the Ito Line, or a 10 minute taxi ride from JR Atami Station, served by the Tokaido Shinkansen, the Tokaido Main Line, and the Ito Line.
Atami, in Shizuoka Prefecture, is a 45-minute ride from Tokyo Station on the Kodama Shinkansen (¥4,070); otherwise, it takes just under two hours on the Tokaido line (¥1,980). At Atami Station, transfer to the Ito line for Kinomiya Station (2 minutes; ¥150). From there, it is a 10-minute walk to the gardens. You can also catch a bus (15 minutes; ¥230), which runs four times an hour, direct to the gardens from bus stop no 1 in front of Atami Station; get off at the ‘Baien’ stop.
autumn vibes at Atami Plum Garden
#fallishere
Saw some of autumn's best colours here at the Atami Plum Garden. We joined a day tour which covers here. Initially we thought this place will be nicer in spring for the plum blossoms, but lo and behold as we walked in, the autumn colours start to show! It was really nice! There were lots of locals taking photos as well.
Entrance is free so do consider to drop by if you are in Atami!
Getting There - self drive or hiring a local driver would be ideal! You would have to change a couple of trains if you come here from tokyo
