The Tea Horse Ancient Road is a folk international trade route in the southwest region of China, where horse caravans were the main mode of transportation. It originated from the ancient tea-horse barter trade on the southwestern frontier, flourished during the Tang and Song dynasties, and reached its peak in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Tea Horse Ancient Road is divided into the Sichuan-Tibet line and the Yunnan-Tibet line, connecting Sichuan, Yunnan, and Tibet, and extending into Bhutan, Nepal, India, and even as far as the Red Sea coast of West Asia and West Africa.
