Since the hotel was right downtown and the area was bustling, I didn't feel even a hint of fear walking alone at night. The shopkeepers were so welcoming—even with the language barrier, they were happy to help using translation apps 🙂↕️ I had morning tickets for the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, but I barely made it in before the cutoff and ended up exploring leisurely through the afternoon. I’d read reviews saying the pandas are usually napping and inactive in the afternoon, but I got lucky and saw them all moving around! ✨🐼 I also had a "fateful encounter" at a perfume shop I happened to wander into... You really don't need to wander around looking for food when traveling to Xiamen! I've dug up a hidden gem that locals keep to themselves✨. Unlock authentic Minnan flavors all in one stop—get your fill of satay noodles + specialty snacks at once! The broth for their satay noodles is made with real care! Pure peanuts are fried and then hand-ground, and it's slow-cooked for a full 5 hours. Every bite is genuinely fresh and sweet, and the noodles are coated in rich, flavorful broth—so delicious! 🍮 Black gold matcha taro pastry The crust is crispy and flaky, and it bursts with a molten center when you break it open! Dense, smooth, handmade taro paste mixed with the fresh aroma of matcha—the balance of bitter and sweet is just right. Chewy and not cloying, sweet but not overpowering. Matcha lovers and taro lovers will be instantly hooked. 🥚 Double yolk roll The ingredients are super generous; they don't skimp on anything.

Finally!! Shapowei now has an authentic stir-fried seafood feast pot! The freshly caught and stir-fried base is super fragrant!! Then add pumpkin porridge to soak up all the essence and bring it to a boil 🤤🤤 It's incredibly fresh and delicious. Drink the seafood essence porridge base first, then add broth to cook other dishes 😋 Two ways to eat in one pot, double the satisfaction. There are also Minnan snacks you can order blindly without worrying about bad choices. Each portion is under ¥9.9. Vegetable cake, five-spice rolls, and fluffy crispy tofu. Refreshing and delicious, they pair perfectly with the seafood! The rooftop seats offer a direct view of the Twin Towers. You can take great photos without having to wait in crowds 📷 If you're done exploring Shapowei, you really should try this place!!

6 days and 5 nights in Xiamen. Since we happened to encounter a typhoon, the furthest we went this time was Tong'an Film City. We missed Yunshuiyao (due to fallen trees) and the Tulou clusters; Xiamen is definitely not as lively as it used to be. The shops across Xiamen Island are all quite similar, and the restaurants have a flavor profile very close to what you find in Taiwan. The only places I’d truly recommend from this trip are Xiao Yan Jing Seafood and Haidilao. Since we were traveling as a family on a self-guided tour, we prioritized a relaxed pace—mostly eating, drinking, and wandering around, then heading back to the hotel to rest when tired. I suggest staying near Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street; you can just walk downstairs to explore, and calling a Didi is very convenient. For attractions, you can visit Gulangyu, the Botanical Garden, Nanputuo Temple, Xiamen University, and Jimei School Village—just keep in mind that some places require advance reservations! Weather-wise, September is stiflingly hot if there’s no breeze. Prices in Xiamen are also on the higher side. If you ask me whether I recommend visiting, I’d say it’s worth a trip, but do your homework first. Unless you’re a huge fan of Xiamen, visiting once is probably enough!

Does Xiamen offer enough for a short weekend break? I’d say yes, especially if you’re looking for a city escape that doesn’t require a packed itinerary. Over a weekend, you can explore the historic streets of Gulangyu, wander through old neighbourhoods, visit Nanputuo Temple and take in the coastal scenery. Gulangyu is certainly popular with tourists, but its car-free lanes, colonial-era villas and relaxed atmosphere still make it one of Xiamen’s most distinctive experiences. What makes Xiamen interesting is that much of its appeal comes from simply slowing down. Spend an afternoon around Shapowei, browse its cafés and creative spaces, stop for some local food, and take a walk along the waterfront as the city lights come on. There’s also plenty to eat, from Fujian-style noodles and seafood to oyster dishes and local snacks. Unlike cities where you feel pressured to tick off one attraction after another, Xiamen works quite well when you leave some time unplanned. But perhaps that’s also the reason some travellers might find Xiamen underwhelming. It doesn’t necessarily have the dramatic landmarks or endless attractions of Beijing, Shanghai or even nearby Fujian destinations. Instead, its charm is more subtle, in terms of food, coastline, architecture and everyday city life. For two nights and a couple of days, that can be exactly what makes it enjoyable. Lingtong Mountain is known as the premier mountain in southern Fujian and is a national volcanic geological park. The entire mountain is composed of volcanic rock peaks. The most famous attraction is the Lingtong Rock Hanging Temple, embedded in a crevice on the cliff face—you don't need to travel all the way to Shanxi to see the wonders of ancient cliff architecture. There is also a naturally formed 321-meter-tall Buddha silhouette on the mountain, as well as the limited-time "Beaded Curtain" waterfall. The routes here offer great flexibility; the leisurely route for casual visitors and the deep hiking route for enthusiasts don't interfere with each other. With affordable tickets and low tourist density, it's perfect for a niche getaway. 📸 Must-Visit Spots 1. Lingtong Rock - Hanging Qingyun Temple The entire ancient temple is hidden in a depression on a cliff over 900 meters high, supported only by a dozen wooden pillars. The red walls are tucked into the cliff cave. Standing on the viewing platform in front of the temple looking down into the deep valley, with clouds and mist drifting by, you'll feel as if you're in a fantasy world. The temple is peaceful, perfect for quiet prayer, and you can also enjoy some local mountain tea to refresh yourself. 2. "Beaded Curtain" Waterfall A spectacle only visible after rain. Water pours down from the cliff top, and as the wind blows, the mist scatters like a curtain of beads. If the sun is shining, you might even catch a rainbow. There's no need to get too close; the viewing platform in the distance offers the best atmosphere for photos. 3. Natural Lingtong Giant Buddha Looking at the mountain from a distance, you can see the naturally formed silhouette of a giant Buddha head, with clear eyebrows and eyes—a masterpiece of nature. It is recommended to take photos from the Tongtian Terrace for the most stunning panoramic view. 4. Qingtian Peak The highest peak of Lingtong Mountain. If you have enough energy, challenge yourself to reach the summit. The stone steps are steep, but once you reach the top, you can enjoy a 360° view of the rolling mountains and surging sea of clouds—the view is incredibly vast. If you don't want a high-intensity hike, just view it from afar; there's no need to force the climb. 💫 Experience It is recommended to enter the park between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM. This is the golden window for encountering mist and sea of clouds, and also the time with the fewest crowds. If you just want a relaxing trip to see the highlights, take the leisure trail directly to the Hanging Temple. It takes 3–4 hours round trip, is low difficulty, and is suitable for all ages. If you prefer hiking and exploration, you can climb to Qingtian Peak. The back mountain trail has fewer visitors and is accompanied by strange rocks and caves along the way. The temperature in the mountains is lower than at the foot, making the shaded trails very cool and a great escape from the summer heat. Slow down your pace, stop to listen to the mountain breeze, and watch the clouds drift—that is the right way to experience Lingtong Mountain. 🗓 Best Season ✅ March–May: Plentiful rain, the "Beaded Curtain" waterfall is at its fullest ✅ September–November: Crisp autumn weather, highest probability of seeing a sea of clouds 👉 Visit 1–2 days after rain to see both the sea of clouds and the waterfall for the ultimate experience. 🚗 Transportation Guide Address: Lingtong Scenic Area, Daxi Town, Pinghe County, Zhangzhou City 🚘 Driving [Recommended]: Navigate to Qingyun Temple Parking Lot. About 2 hours from Xiamen, 1.5 hours from Zhangzhou. Exit the highway at the Lingtong Mountain toll station. The last section has many winding mountain roads, so drive carefully and slowly. Parking fee is 10 yuan for the whole day. 🚌 Public Transport: Take the high-speed train to Yunxiao Station, then take a taxi or ride-share for 40 minutes to reach the scenic area. Alternatively, take a county bus to Daxi Town and transfer to a vehicle to go up the mountain. 🎒 Essential Checklist ▪ Non-slip hiking shoes! The stone steps are damp and mossy, making them very slippery. ▪ A light jacket, as it is windy at the summit and there is a significant temperature difference. ▪ 1–2L of drinking water + some light snacks, as there are very few supply points on the mountain. ▪ A dual-purpose umbrella for sun and rain, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent. ▪ Download offline maps on your phone in advance, as signal can be weak in some valleys. 💰 Practical Tips Tickets: 20 yuan/person. Shuttle buses are available; you can take one if you don't want to climb the long stairs. ❗ Do not cross the safety railings when taking photos on the cliff; safety first. ❗ Go up the mountain before 4:30 PM to leave enough time for the descent and avoid traveling at night.

I was absolutely blown away by the food here 😱—Wu Hongying Seafood Claypot Porridge. Oyster omelet, melt-in-your-mouth radish cake, and fresh shrimp in sesame sauce. Everything was incredibly fresh and sweet 😋. The total came to about NT$1,500, which fed 3-4 people (the three of us were stuffed!). This is definitely a spot I’ll be returning to ❤️. Wu Hongying Seafood Claypot Porridge is a homegrown Xiamen brand. Their original, well-known location is tucked away in the old Xiamen district at No. 2-3 Shengping Road, near the Eighth Market and Zhongshan Road. Today, they’ve expanded from that flagship shop to several locations, including Shapowei, MixC, and Jimei. According to 2026 data, they now operate five direct-managed branches. What makes their story unique is their commitment to "transparency" in every pot. Instead of using a pre-cooked porridge base, they emphasize simmering raw rice from scratch. The seafood is caught, prepared, and cooked live on the spot. With an open-kitchen setup, guests can watch the entire process. Here, everyone can find a spot to their liking, from bustling tourist hubs to secluded corners. The best time to visit is during the last ten days of September and throughout October—just be sure to avoid the National Day holiday (October 1–8), as hotel prices skyrocket and crowds become overwhelming. During this period, the intense heat subsides into a comfortable warmth, typhoon season ends, and the sea remains invitingly warm. 1. Baicheng Beach (厦大白城沙滩, Xiàdà Báichéng Shātān) The most famous and accessible beach, located right by the South Campus of Xiamen University. It offers iconic views of the Yanwu Bridge and the Twin Towers. 👍Pros Perfect sunsets, excellent infrastructure, and close proximity to the university campus and city center. 👎Cons Extremely crowded on weekends; water can appear murky during low tide. 🚇🚕🚌Getting There Metro: Take Line 1 or 2 to Zhenhai Road (Zhenhailu) or Haibinlou station, followed by a ~10-minute walk. It’s a breezy spot with plenty of entertainment options. 👍Pros Vast area, less crowded than Baicheng, and clean sand. 👎Cons Strong winds; relatively far from main tourist attractions. 🚇🚕🚌Getting There Taxi from Metro: Take Line 2 to Guanyinshan station, then a 10-minute taxi ride (~10 RMB). Bus: Route 38 to the "Guanyinshan – Seaside" stop. 4. Zengcuoan Beach (曾厝垵海滩, Zēngcuò'àn Hǎitān) Located directly opposite the famous Zengcuoan tourist village. Perfect if you want to combine a market stroll with seaside relaxation. 👍Pros Convenient location, surrounded by numerous cafes and snack stalls, fine sand. 👎Cons Noisy, crowded, and can be a bit untidy due to its proximity to the tourist hub. Getting There Bus: Route 29 to the "Zengshan" or "Music Square" stop. 5. Music Square (音乐广场, Yīnyuè Guǎngchǎng) A unique pebble beach that stands in sharp contrast to the sandy shores. The seaside benches and pebbles create a distinct, artistic atmosphere. 👍Pros Great for photos, fewer tourists, and an atmospheric spot for sunsets. 👎Cons Pebbles instead of sand make it uncomfortable to lie down or walk barefoot. 🚌Getting There Bus: Route 29 to the "Music Square" or "Zengshan" stop. 6. "One Country, Two Systems" Beach (一国两制沙滩, Yīguó Liǎngzhì Shātān) An iconic location featuring the massive "One Country, Two Systems" banner. You can see Kinmen Island clearly from here, giving the beach a unique historical vibe. 👍Pros Interesting photo op, good views, and less crowded. 👎Cons Remote location with limited nearby infrastructure. 🚕🚌Getting There By taxi or bus along Huandao Road; look for the International Conference & Exhibition Center. 7. Pearl Bay Beach (珍珠湾沙滩, Zhēnzhūwān Shātān) A small, cozy beach loved for its calm atmosphere and picturesque views. An excellent spot for a leisurely stroll. 👍Pros Quiet, beautiful scenery, ideal for walking along the water's edge. 👎Cons Small area; can get cramped during peak hours. 🚌Getting There Bus: Routes along Huandao Road, located near Xiamen University. 🌊New Trending Beach 8. Dihuazhou (荻花洲) – The ultra-popular "Xiamen's Answer to Twilight Beach," located in the Xiang'an district. 🚇Easy access via Metro (International Expo Center station, Line 3). Secluded Escapes 🌊💫 9. Xitouxia Beach (溪头下沙滩) – A hidden gem in the Huangcuo area featuring an old door standing on the sand, opening toward the ocean. Photographers love it for its "portal to the sea" and black rocks. There are almost no tourists, plus a cozy cafe and loungers. 🚌Get there by bus to the "Xitouxia" stop. 10. Houtian Beach (后田沙滩) – For those seeking total seclusion. Located in the Tong'an district at the eastern edge of the city. The sand and water are very clean; locals often come here for camping and picnics. In recent years, when mentioning non-standard commercial spaces, Xiamen's Degenerate Park is definitely on the list. Born from an art installation and spearheaded by a creative agency rather than a traditional real estate developer, this rooftop commercial project has maintained its popularity and remained a hot topic since opening in 2024. Degenerate Park is located on the 6th-floor rooftop of Xianghe Plaza in Xiamen's Siming District. The project transformed an unused rooftop terrace of a building in the old town into a "small street" with park-like attributes, with commercial spaces naturally unfolding along this path. Even now, this concept remains very novel, and it would be hard to find another commercial format quite like it in China. After walking around, you can clearly see the traces of the professional backgrounds of the three founders of Degenerate Architecture. Tang Jiansong, Wang Qi, and Yang Lutong come from the fields of architecture, art curation and media, and graphic design, respectively. On the limited rooftop area, the project created an arc-shaped path, while incorporating wayfinding, rest areas, and public spaces with a staged feel; the entire circulation and visual experience have been quite thoroughly designed. In particular, the process of entering an old building from downstairs, walking all the way up to the rooftop, and suddenly starting to "stroll down a street" is inherently unconventional. The original sense of age of the building forms a strong contrast with the young, fresh, and even somewhat surreal atmosphere presented by the rooftop commercial space. Having covered the spatial aspect, returning to the business itself, things start to get interesting. From its inception, Degenerate Park naturally possessed the conditions to become a "viral commercial space." This has proven true; people coming here to check in and take photos are easily more noticeable than those actually making purchases. But "viral" is just the result; what's truly worth discussing is what it actually contains. In the commercial composition of Degenerate Park, there is a very high concentration of founder-led brands. According to the project's initial philosophy, it attempted to oppose the issues of excessive refinement, homogenization, and high consumption thresholds found in standard commercial complexes, hoping to allow more personalized and experimental content to enter the commercial space. Interestingly, after a large number of founder-led brands with similar aesthetics, modes of expression, and target audiences gathered together, it gradually formed another kind of refinement and homogenization. You will see familiar coffee, apparel, and lifestyle brands, familiar visual languages, and familiar founder narratives. You will also encounter a consumption experience that has become increasingly common in many non-standard commercial spaces in recent years: every shop looks very unique, but when placed together, they increasingly seem to belong to the same world. Degenerate Park also seems to have inherited a part of the temperament left behind by Xiamen as a "first-generation viral city." It is very photogenic, sounds trendy, and is interesting enough for a first visit. You will easily remember the street on the rooftop, the contrast between the old building and the new space, and those scenes that are perfect for being photographed and shared. But when the photo-taking and the novelty fade, a more realistic question remains: beyond just "having been here," what else does this place offer to make people truly stay?

1️⃣ Day 1: "A-Jie Five-spice Roll" (Bashi Branch): A local specialty snack; you can try one for 4 yuan. "Shangguan Chestnut Four-fruit Soup": Classic four-fruit soup. Add ice for a cool, refreshing taste. "Caiwan Mama" (Gugong Main Branch): Fried vinegar pork, wontons, and vegetable balls. Freshly fried, crispy, and delicious. "Wutang Satay Noodles" (Daxue Road Branch): Basic seafood satay noodles. The satay broth is very rich and delicious 😋. 2️⃣ Day 2: "Senshan Grass Jelly": Taro paste grass jelly, very delicious and refreshing. "Ye Keyi" (Buwen Dongxi Park): The matcha and lemon swirl ice cream is delicious. The matcha flavor is rich and authentic. It's a super pretty little wooden cabin. "Yishu Yiye" (Shigu Road): Green mango jasmine and small green citrus tea. A refreshing Indian gooseberry fruit tea. It's super cooling to drink on a hot day. "Tongweihua Gapao Rice" (Shigu Road): Incredible value for money, really super delicious. The water spinach with shrimp paste is also recommended. "Chashanpai" (Shigu Road): The wild hawthorn and osmanthus jelly is also good—a refreshing type of drink. "Yangfu Jiang Mochi" (Shigu Road): The ice cream taro mochi is super delicious. It's coated in Oreo powder, which pairs perfectly. The texture is icy, chewy, and crispy. 3️⃣ Day 3: "Shuanghong Snack Shop": Vermicelli noodles + lean meat and oysters. Hexiang West Road branch. Very comfortable for breakfast. "Adai Ginger Duck": Very friendly portion size for one person. Dry, fragrant, and very delicious. The oyster omelet is also recommended; you can taste the fresh, sweet flavor of the sea. "Cui Da": Brown sugar shaved ice. The chewy rice noodles pair perfectly with the brown sugar shaved ice. "Shuxia Wushi": A cafe halfway up the mountain. The environment is super pretty and comfortable, and the owner is handsome too. There are two cute cats in the shop, Qiuka! "Pin San Wan": A small Taiwanese eatery with a subtle Taiwanese flavor. The golden crispy rice is delicious, with the rice soaked in broth. The sunset sea bus is a unique Xiamen experience. This route between the island and Haicang is truly breathtaking! You'll see Gulangyu, the Twin Towers, Haicang Bridge, and the scenery along both sides of the Lujiang River! This place is truly a must-eat every time I visit… 🍜 The satay broth is so rich it coats the spoon, with a slight kick of spice and the mellow flavor of peanut butter, and the toppings are super generous. 🍗 The fried vinegar pork is incredible! Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with that unique Minnan sweet-and-sour flavor—it's the perfect way to cut through the richness of the noodles. 🥟 Remember to take a sip of the soup first when you bite into the crab roe soup dumpling while it's hot; it's incredibly delicious.

An old Bashi shop with tons of regulars! Classic Xiamen flavors, authentic Minnan taste~ You can order anything on the menu and you won't be disappointed 😋 ✅ Signature satay noodles I absolutely ❤️ this bowl of satay noodles! The broth is rich but not overly salty. The freshly brewed peanut aroma is strong; it's delicious even just drinking the soup on its own 😋 The toppings include 🦑 large shrimp, clams, and more—so fresh and delicious! ✅ Ginger duck The duck is cooked just right and isn't tough when you bite into it. Slow-simmered over low heat, it's super flavorful and gets better with every chew. If you can't finish it, you can get it packed to go; it's perfect with rice at home. ✅ Oyster omelet A very Minnan-style preparation! The oysters are quite large 🦪 The egg is pan-fried until fragrant, with crispy edges. Remember to dip it in Xiamen chili sauce; it really enhances the flavor.

#hotdiscussions Shapowei (沙坡尾) in Xiamen is touristy now, but I’d still say it’s worth checking out, especially if you like photographing urban neighbourhoods, cafés, street art and places with a bit of character. My take: ⭐ 8/10 What I like ❤️ The old fishing-harbour atmosphere is still visible, particularly around the waterfront. ❤️ The mix of old Minnan buildings, murals, cafés, small shops and creative spaces makes it quite photogenic. ❤️ It feels considerably more interesting than a generic commercial pedestrian street. ❤️ Sunset → evening is probably the best time: softer light, harbour views, cafés and a livelier atmosphere. ❤️ It’s free and compact, so there’s little downside if you’re already around Xiamen University. The downside: ⤵️ don’t expect a hidden village anymore. The Art West Zone in particular has been developed into a popular creative/tourist area, with cafés, shops and Instagram-friendly spots. suggested itinerary: Xiamen University → Shapowei harbour → Art West Zone → wander the side streets → dinner/drinks → sunset/night photos The key is not to just follow the obvious tourist route. Walk around the harbour and older side streets rather than spending all your time inside the Art West Zone. If you’re looking for “authentic old Xiamen”, Shapowei isn’t completely that anymore. If you’re looking for “old Xiamen mixed with young, creative Xiamen”, it’s actually one of the better places to experience that contrast.

April is the perfect season to visit Xiamen! The temperature and weather are just right! Sharing my 4-day, 3-night Xiamen travel guide! 🏨 Accommodation: Stay on Xiamen Island. I recommend hotels near the railway station for convenient travel. Being near the subway is best, as most of Xiamen's attractions are on the island. 🚇 Transportation: If you're taking a high-speed train, I recommend booking to "Xiamen Station," which is more convenient as it's right in the city center. If you book to "Xiamen North," I suggest taking the BRT or Metro Line 1 to get to the island. 🍜 Food: Xiamen is mainly about Minnan cuisine, snacks, and seafood. Xiamen's food tends to be on the sweeter and lighter side. If you love spicy food, you might not be used to it. There are also a lot of taro paste dishes. 🌊 About attractions Here are a few places I think you must visit: ✔️ Huangcuo Beach (very beautiful and perfect for watching the sunrise) ✔️ Health Trail Linhai Line (Xiamen's most beautiful mountain-to-sea boardwalk) ✔️ Zhenzhu Bay - Music Square (the stunning coastline of Zengcuo'an) ✔️ Jiageng Park (the best park for viewing the sea) ✔️ Jimei Dashe (a very chic and artistic neighborhood of old houses) ✔️ Shangli Reservoir (Xiamen's "Little Switzerland," very Japanese-style) ✔️ Garden Expo Park (one of the most worthwhile attractions in Xiamen, the kind you can spend a whole day at! The Lantern Park at the Garden Expo is perfect for visiting with kids. It's directly accessible by subway and features 9 major themed lantern matrixes, including the "Cloud Palace," "Peach Blossom Fairyland," and "Hundred Birds Returning to the Nest." On weekends, there are resident NPCs, as well as spectacular mecha parades and "Fairy Scattering Flowers" performances. The atmosphere is very lively and exciting. You can explore Jimei School Village during the day and take the kids to the Lantern Park in the evening. You can make the Garden Expo Park your last stop.) ✔️ 🏝️ About Gulangyu Remember to book your tickets in advance. I suggest setting aside a full day. The island is perfect for a leisurely city walk. You can check my homepage for a Gulangyu guide. ⚠️ Pitfalls to avoid ❌ The souvenir shops on Zhongshan Road are quite a trap; I don't recommend buying from them. The snacks are average and not very tasty. ❌ The commercial street in Zengcuo'an has many tourist traps, and most of the food is bad. Really, don't eat there. ❌ Most of the homestays in Zengcuo'an look nothing like their photos. I really don't recommend staying in them! ❌ Many seafood vendors at Bashi are tourist traps; they might shortchange you on weight or swap your items. Be very careful when eating seafood! I suggest taking it to the market entrance to re-weigh it yourself! ❌ Don't drive yourself. There are many people in Xiamen, parking spaces are hard to find, and it's very congested during holidays. Looking out over the avenue, the view was unforgettable: massive elevated overpass pillars completely blanketed in thick, vibrant ivy created a lush green bridge framed by high-rise towers and classic residential balconies. As the sun began to peek above the horizon, the sky shifted from soft pastel pink to a radiant golden amber. Morning light filtered through the urban canopy, illuminating the leaves and casting long, soft shadows down the empty multi-lane road below. Standing there in the morning air, watching the first few cars glide down the quiet street as light bounced off the distant glass towers, I felt a deep sense of peace. Unlike the crowded beaches at midday, watching the sunrise from this green elevated vantage point felt like a quiet, intimate secret shared only with the early city. Xiamen is honestly much more enjoyable to explore than I imagined. 🇨🇳🌊 During this trip, I visited Huangcuo Beach and Huandao Road, and caught the night view of Xiamen. The beach is so refreshing during the day, and the sunset is stunning. Seeing the Twin Towers at night offers a completely different vibe. ✨ The whole city has such a laid-back feel.
