2025 Toledo Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in May)

#celebrateit Some people found Madrid boring. It could be, if you’re not a fan of museums. BUT you still must go to Madrid, for an unpretentious town 70km away from it: Toledo. As an UNESCO world heritage site, no surprise this place houses quite a few must-go: 1) Catedral Primada de Toledo, 2) Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes; 3) Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz, which are the representatives of the three main cultures in Toledo: Christian, Jews and Muslims—check out other posts of mine. But even the township itself is remarkable enough. It’s an ancient town built on a hill surrounded by a river, which means plenty of views as you get up and in the alleys. But that also means it could be tiring to navigate in the town. I strongly advise to leave out one FULL day for Toledo. If possible, take the earliest bus (or train) from Madrid so you can arrive around dawn. Ancient towns look best when light is not harsh.

This earth-toned Moorish-style building has a four-corner tower-style bell tower on one side of the main building. The top is decorated with multi-petal arches and staggered battlements. It can be described as meticulously crafted and quite beautiful. The interior of the station is just as stunning as its exterior. The walls and floors are made up of a large number of floral tiles, and the windows are inlaid with stained glass, which makes the sunlight that shines in even brighter, cleaner and more colorful. There is also an antique wooden carved ticket counter in the center of the station. It is quite exquisite and fits in with the antique retro feel of Toledo. The train station is located outside the ancient city area. You need to pass through the moat and the city gate to enter the ancient city of Toledo. The ancient city was also listed as a World Heritage Site in 1986. Coming to one of the sanctuaries that gathers three major cultures (Christian/Catholic, Islamic, Judaism), the famous local building is the Dorit Cathedral, founded in 1226. It is one of the three 13th-century Gothic cathedrals in Spain. Entering the Earl's funeral is a must see. Toledo is a recommended day-trip destination for those who go to Madrid. It’s only an hour-train away from Atocha station in central Madrid and there are trains almost every hour. The train ticket can be under €20 depending what class you would like to sit. If you plan to walk around the ancient city, remember to bring your hat/ umbrella / sunscreen if you’re worried about getting freckles or tanned because there is not much shade or cover in the city unless you stay indoor. I did not have anything and walked under the sun for 6 hours… and my skin needs a lot of first-aid afterwards. Recommended to have a walking tour both in the centre where all the shops are and also up the hills and lookouts. Also there are a few museums if you fancy learning more about the local cultures. This time we visited the ancient city of Toledo, not far from Madrid, and stayed at the Alfonso VI Hotel in the city center. The hotel has a medieval feel and is surrounded by iron soldiers, making it a great place to check in. The room we stayed in was said to be a triple room, but it was actually a double room with an extra bed, so it was quite crowded. The bathroom had a bathtub, and I liked the terrace the most, with a great view. The hotel includes breakfast, the food is ok, but you need to pay attention to the dirty dishes, as the dishwasher may not be able to clean them thoroughly, so it is best to bring your own cleaning supplies. The hotel is in a good location, basically all the attractions are within walking distance, and it's great to stroll through the ancient city. it's location is in a hidden alley way. but when you Comes in... wow.. the interesting place with a nice vibe. The staff are super friendly and also helpful with checking for allergens. They speak English and Spanish, very friendly and service it's good.the colorful space for pizzas, burgers, tapas & burritos, with a vegetarian selection also. the pizza was very fantastic that it’s thin crust with a solid undercarriage. They had some locally made liquors which seems interesting to try. I had a home made lemonade with mint and ginger which was really refreshing after a long walk under the heat of Toledo.
