Have You Tried BOTOK BOTOK?
Botok Botok is a specialty dish in Johor and i got the opportunity to try it first time in Batu Pahat (2hours away from JB) where they served this dish as part of lunch meal course.
📍Then i found a shop in Johor Bahru that sell this flavorful traditional dish, “Botok Botok Ibunda JB”! This shop have few types of Botok Botok include fish, chicken and roe. I attached their menus which can be seen in the photos👆🏻 I purchased Botok-Botok steamed fish and roe, and both are totally delicious! 😋 Plus point; Eat with Rice!
🌟Botok Botok is a dish made of a mixture of vegetables (ulam-ulaman), fish, chili, and coconut flesh, and the combination of the ingredients is then traditionally wrapped in banana leaves and steamed.
🐟 The kind of fish use are usually spanish mackerels (tenggiri) or chub mackerels (kembung). I just found out at this shop they also have roe (telur ikan) and chicken Botok-Botok (ayam).
🌿 Sometimes, the Johorean will include several types of vegetables (ulam-ulaman) and the steam imparting a unique and slightly sweet flavour to the dish.

Kip mall in jb tampoi with Jalan Jalan Japan
you can take a direct bus from jb sentral costing rm2 and alight 20mins at the bus stop named Kip mall. cut across the petrol stations walk out to the roads and on the right will be Kip mall with wet market, supermarket, pet stall, dried foods stalls, small food court, massage and facial services, kiddy rides, mr diy, Jalan Jalan Japan, cheap clothing and toy shops, claw machines etc.
it was our first time in this mall and we spent the whole afternoon here before making our way to the Tuesday Taman tampoi utara night market (see my previous post) around 7pm.
our 3 yo girl enjoyed herself with the kiddy rides and the toys selection at Jalan Jalan Japan. we didn’t even have time to visit mr diy this time.
we had chicken chop (deep fried chicken with coleslaw and cheese fries) for rm8.50 which was quite yummy! bought 3 trays of fruits for rm5 and got one free from the friendly lady seller! #urbanexplorer #foodie #境外遊
cheap pasam malam with lotsa fried food
Taman tampoi Utama night market opens every Tuesday 5-9pm along Jalan Sri Perkasa 1/1. It’s a short walk from one end to the other so you could view thru all stalls before you decide on what to buy.
We love the brown fried bee Hoon near the end of the market selling at rm3 per box. also packed rm3 deep fried chicken skin from the same stall which came with yummy chilli.
The nearby Putuh piring costs rm4 for 6 pieces.
Satay is commonly sold at rm1 per stick.
Min Jiang kuey varies from rm1 to 6. Pulut hitam was sold out just before I ordered.
We also savoured a deep fried chicken with aromatic-spiced curry, a super spicy sourish Indonesian chilli which made me teared, and white rice, totally rm8.50.
4 pieces of Otah spring roll at the start of the market going for rm2 which the toddler kept eating as it’s not spicy.
We grabbed both ways between the night market and the point boutique hotel beside kipmart, costing rm9 and rm7.

Abbu Bakar Restaurant in Johor
#malaysiatrip
Looking to eat some local food in Johor that is near checkpoint? With just around 10 minutes drive, you can dine at Abbu Bakar. It was my first time there and the food was good.
My family ordered the 4 pax set which consist of Siakap Bakar (fish), Sotong (squid), eggplant, egg, otak-otak and chicken. We had two squid dishes and a dish was unavailable. Most of the dishes were spicy but it was manageable. If you’re looking for child friendly food, it will be fried chicken and egg. For the set, it comes with drinks too!
There is even a photo opportunity with a sampan!
