We continue our gastronomic travel in China with introduction of widely spread, well known and daily eaten dishes. Previous post was dedicated to the Guangdong Cantonese cuisine. For this time we will talk about typical North West dishes. Mian or noodles. It just sounds simple but in China you will meet the variety of this product and classification will be based on size and shape of noodles made of wheat flour. At the picture you can see so called mao xi , which named so because it is very thing and compared to the hair in its thickness. The soup itself is a masterpiece of culinary! The Chief put there one thousand different species! Another one dish originally come from North East 东北 region but was very warm excepted in the north west and even modified a little. Huang Men Ji 黄焖鸡 is a fried and braised chicken in the souse with special species like ginger, soy bean souse and oyster sauce. The must be included ingredients are potato and several vegetables you can pick up by your self before cooking. Boiled rise is a typical garnish. That was very beautiful and nice restaurant with authentic atmosphere and very creative decoration. One thing that must be mentioned in Xi'an is the Hukou Waterfall. Many tourists who come to Xi'an ignore this attraction or feel that it takes too long and give up and spend their time on the commercialized Muslim Street instead. I personally feel that it is difficult to imagine the power of nature if you don’t experience it yourself, and you can’t feel the shock just by looking at the photos. .

This is the best thematic museum experience I have ever had! It shattered my stereotype that museums are "only for looking, not touching." "Underground relics are in Shaanxi, above-ground relics are in Shanxi," and Shanxi's most brilliant gems are half in wooden structures, the other half on the walls. What is collected here is not just pigments and lines, but also beliefs, lifestyles, and aesthetics spanning over two thousand years from the Han and Tang dynasties to the Ming and Qing dynasties. - • The exhibits are divided into seven major spaces by era, from the simplicity of Qin and Han, the grandeur of Tang and Liao, the elegant charm of Song and Jin, the vastness of Yuan and Ming, to the worldly scenes of Qing. • The guide said that Shanxi province alone holds over 70% of the country's temple murals, and ancient murals before the Yuan dynasty account for more than 90% nationwide. If I could recommend only one "treasure of the museum" from Shanxi, it must be the "Chaoyuan Tu" (Court Worship) in the Sanqing Hall of Yongle Palace. Standing before this massive mural, 97 meters long and depicting 286 deities, you can truly feel what "the whole wall moves with the wind" means. In the early morning, the crowing roosters awaken the sleeping ancient town; at dusk, the setting sun bathes the old streets in a warm red glow.🏠 The stone-paved roads tell stories thousands of years old; the rustic buildings hold the secrets of time. Xinghan Scenic Area is a national 4A-level tourist attraction located in Hantai District, Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province. The scenic area centers on Han culture and is built to the national 5A-level scenic spot standards, with a total investment of over ten billion yuan and a construction period of five years. The area features five major Han culture core theme attractions, Xinghan Inn, cultural exhibition and experience zones, specialty shops, restaurants, and other comprehensive supporting facilities. Main attractions: The Han Culture Museum is the landmark building of the scenic area, blending architectural styles from the Western Han, Eastern Han, and Shu Han capitals. Inside the museum are an underwater corridor, ancestral hall, sage hall, and a large collection of precious Han cultural relics. The Han Yuefu showcases Han dynasty music, dance, and opera through multimedia and interactive experiences. Hanren Laojia Street recreates the market life scenes of the Han dynasty, where visitors can taste authentic local food and participate in cultural activities. Silk Road Style Street displays the prosperity of the Han dynasty Silk Road, featuring various Han dynasty specialty handicrafts and souvenirs.

Majestic Qin Dynasty: Overall positive review, definitely worth it. Located in the western Xixian New Area, it's about a kilometer walk from the subway station. Taking a taxi directly is not expensive either. It's better to arrive a bit early because there are some interactive activities on site. There’s no need to pursue expensive seats for this show; even the CD sections offer a great viewing experience. The 80-minute performance is mostly exciting, except for a dialogue among kings in the middle that made me a bit sleepy, but the assassin part woke me right up. If you want good seats and don’t mind paying extra, you can go through travel agencies or Haixian and inform them of your preferred seats in advance. If you want a budget option, you can try to grab good seats yourself by purchasing from the official site. Seats are assigned quickly after payment; if the seat is bad, you can get a refund and buy again. In practice, it’s not easy to get good seats—I tried more than ten times. If you only plan to buy discount tickets, go directly to Shaanxi Cultural Tourism Benefit. One account can buy up to three tickets; for more people, use multiple accounts. Tickets are non-refundable, and seats are assigned randomly like a blind box, but most seats in one order are likely to be together. Big Wild Goose Pagoda + Tang Paradise Night Market: Exit the subway and walk from north to south. Just take a quick look at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda; there’s a circle of shops around the wall. Tang Paradise Night Market is really well done overall, with a comfortable atmosphere and some performances at night. It feels like a loss if you don’t come here. The fountain should just be sound-activated since everyone is shouting so enthusiastically—it shouldn’t go to waste. For the return trip, you can take a taxi from either side or the south exit; the subway requires a bit of walking. City Wall: Also buy tickets from Shaanxi Cultural Tourism Benefit, one ticket per ID, seniors free, students half price. Hanguang Gate has an elevator, and the Hanguang Gate Museum is quite simple. Yongning Gate is the most magnificent; there is said to be a city opening ceremony in the morning. The bikes are not very easy to ride; they have front bars, and if you’re not used to them, you might fall when getting off. We started at Yongning Gate and walked down to Hanguang Gate, which felt very nice. Tickets allow re-entry on the same day, but there seems to be a one-hour interval required. Bell Tower and Drum Tower: Just view and take photos from a distance; they look even more beautiful at night. Xi'an Museum + Small Wild Goose Pagoda: Free reservation required, but be sure to enter strictly on time; late arrivals are not allowed in. Shaanxi History Museum: I made a reservation but didn’t go because of scheduling conflicts. This time I wanted to take it easy and avoid crowded museums. If you have the same preference, consider the Archaeological Museum or Xi'an Museum instead. I’ll visit next time.

The autumn break in Sichuan came quite suddenly. As soon as the notice was issued, I started thinking about where to take the kids. My child is in second grade and has recently become obsessed with treasure hunt books about different places. Coincidentally, they were also reading about a treasure hunt in Shaanxi, and they also like official robes and culture, so we decided to just go for it – a trip to Xi'an! 1. Booking Tickets: The school hadn't confirmed the autumn break, so we hadn't bought tickets yet. By the time I decided to, the only available tickets were for 3:48 PM on the 12th to Xi'an, so I immediately booked both the outbound and return tickets! 2. Attraction Tickets: Our destination was the Shaanxi History Museum – a must-see! Because it truly is the pinnacle of museums, and since we were already there, we figured we might as well take the kids to see it. She wanted to see the golden monster, the agate cup with animal heads, the inverted-pouring vessel, the gold bowl, the gilded sachet, etc. We tried to buy tickets five days in advance through WeChat, but it was impossible. So we hired a guided tour on Alipay for 59 yuan per person, and they helped us buy tickets for 39 yuan each for the kids. We figured since we were going to hire a guide anyway, at least we could get in. The tickets we finally managed to get were for the 12:30 PM on the 14th. We finalized our visit to the Shaanxi History Museum, and the 13th was our Terracotta Warriors trip. We immediately booked tickets through WeChat. Children under 16 were free, and we reserved tickets for the 8:30 PM opening time. We figured we'd either go early or late, but it turned out everyone else was thinking the same thing, resulting in a very crowded morning when we went. 3. Hotel Section On the 12th, we went straight to the Anman Hotel near Huaqing Palace. The next morning, we booked a car to the Terracotta Warriors, which took 20 minutes. On the 13th and 14th, we stayed at the Aihausen Hotel near Xiaozhai Metro Station. The hotel was easy to find and provided breakfast. I thought it was good value for money. 👌🏻 4. Sightseeing Section On the 12th, we went from Chengdu East to Xi'an North to Huaqing Palace to the hotel and then to the food court. We went to the Terracotta Warriors on the 13th. Wanting to get there as early as possible, we went straight to Huaqing Palace after arriving in Xi'an on the 12th. The subway ride from Xi'an North to Huaqing Palace took 1 hour and 37 minutes. We thought we could see the "Song of Everlasting Regret" that evening, but online reviews said it wasn't suitable for children, and the stage was open-air and cold at night, so we gave up and went straight to the night market for food. The roujiamo (Chinese hamburger) there was incredibly meaty! There are twice as many as in Xi'an. On the 13th, we visited the Terracotta Warriors, Lishan Garden, and the Huaxia Xi'an Cultural Tourism Resort to see the Camel Bell Legend. We then went to the hotel and ate halal barbecue at Daxuexi Lane (it was really delicious!). We also visited the Bell Tower. On the 14th, we had a makeover at the Tang Paradise (booked online in advance, starting at 10:30 AM) – Shaanxi History Museum – Xingqing Palace Park – Xi'an Jiaotong University – the fountain at the North Square of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda – walked through the Tang Paradise – watched various performances and took photos – Kaiyuan Square – returned our clothes (or had them delivered the next day) – returned the hotel. On the 15th, we had breakfast at the hotel – Yongning Gate – bought cultural and creative products at Chang'an Street – visited the Bell and Drum Towers – Daxuexi Lane – picked up our luggage at the hotel – Xi'an North. This is Jingbian County, Yulin, Shaanxi, located in the Shaan-Gan-Ning Basin. The climate is dry, and I also encountered strong winds and sandstorm weather. There is the famous Wave Valley Danxia Scenic Area here, but I didn’t go because of the entrance fee (later I found out I could enter for free). Anywhere by the roadside is Danxia landform, where you can park and take photos for free. Along the way, you can see the Great Wall ruins, which are just a very long row of earthen walls. To the north is the Mu Us Desert, where you can play freely without any entrance fee or scenic area. The seemingly desolate desert is actually full of various forms of life. If you observe carefully, it’s very interesting and you can always find fun little things, though your ears get full of sand, which is not very pleasant. Overall, except for Wave Valley, the other places here are relatively off the beaten path, giving you the feeling of having the scenery all to yourself.

There are plenty of spots to stop, take photos, and simply enjoy the view. Walking the wall at sunset was especially magical, with golden light bathing the stones.
