Unique traditional dishes in Pontian Johor
📍Pontian Johor
Burasak and Lepak Lui are both traditional Johor delicacies that showcase the region’s rich culinary heritage.
1. Burasak: This is a type of traditional Johor rice dish that is often made with glutinous rice, coconut milk, and spices, wrapped in a banana leaf and then steamed. It’s somewhat similar to the more widely known “ketupat,” but with a more fragrant, savory twist due to the use of spices and coconut milk. Burasak is commonly served during festive occasions or as a snack with sambal or grilled meats.
2. Lepak Lui: This is a snack or small dish popular in Johor. It typically refers to a savory combination of ingredients like fried dough, chili, and a variety of other toppings. The name “lepak” implies a relaxed, informal way of eating, which fits the casual style of this dish. It’s often enjoyed with friends or family during a leisurely gathering.
Both dishes are great representations of the flavors and traditions of Johor, with a blend of spices and local ingredients

nice coffee
Their Espresso was really delicious. Quite impressive for johor bahru. But waited close to 20 minutes for it. Super small place with only 3 staff members. Most of them seemed busy either making coffee or chatting with customers.
Do not come here if you are in a rush. Maybe caught them at the wrong time, but they also did not seem to be the friendliest bunch. Barely any indoor seats and no signal in the cafe itself. Would come back if I was not In a rush and if I didn’t mind sitting outside by myself or with another person.

Restoran Asam Pedas Asli Muallaf
#myhiddengems
Spicy acid is okay, not too spicy. Suitable for my throat that can't stand spicy. Belacan kale is also good enough to taste. The best flour squid. Soft squid not overcooked, crispy flour and enough flavor. Eating like that is already delicious enough
There are many dining tables but if you go on a holiday, it's hard to get a table because there are many people at lunch time.

NICTAR PINEAPPLE PARK
#myhiddengems
The pineapple farm is a small farm. It's good to explore around 30 minutes. The entrance fee is RM8 and comes with 1 bottle of pineapple juice. I was allowed to tour around the farm at its own leisure. At the start, there was a brief on the farm and types of pineapple planted at the farm.
The farm is well kept. Besides pineapples, there are other plants like loofah, roselle, and landscape flowers.
After the tour, you can order the cut pineapple at RM10 per plate from the counter to taste it. It's sweet and fragrant. They also have pineapple ice cream, too.

Red People Coffe
#myhiddengems
Truly a hidden gem in this rustic old town Pontian! The coffee here is superb with strong aroma.
Quiet environment, friendly boss and his children are well trained by his father to help the customers.
The boss said all their cakes were sold out except tiramisu during the day of my visit. The cake was semi frozen when it was served which impaired the taste.
Overall this was a great place to chill down with a good cup of strong coffee!

Yearn Cafe

A cozy, beautiful cafe with a touch of nature, we love the concept of this place. The food offerings were equally delightful. The Grilled Chicken and Mushroom Baguette, generously portioned, impressed us with its taste.
The Tiramisu, infused with alcohol, met our expectations. For coffee enthusiasts, the latte is a decent choice. Overall, our experience here was exceptional, and I highly recommend it!

Pontian Internet celebrity check-in: Shake Shake Ice + Wonton Noodles
The fusion of ice and fire creates a legendary taste for your taste buds.
Pontian, Johor, Malaysia.
There are two popular booths:
One is "Shake Ice"
One is "Zhaoyi Wonton Noodles"
But speaking of wonton noodles, I prefer another local flavor: "Xing Xing Wonton Noodles".
*“Xingxing” is pronounced in Hokkien: Heng Heng

Kukup - upgraded fishing village
We stayed in Kukup Soh En Resort, for 3 days 2 nights!
Situated at JB, upon reaching the ‘lobby’ of the resort, the owner drove a mini Van out to pick us! (Cute experience, as it’s like a miniature of the lorry we see on the roads)
There are 3 rooms in the resort - each room can sleep 10 people
Big living room with - couch & karaoke machine, 2 tables for eating/activities
Meals provided (steamboat, grilled bbq)
Their staff will help to do the BBQ!
Tea break - super in love with their prawn fritters (unlike the ones from SG, they use small prawns with the shell on)
Crispy & thin!
We get to play fireworks (like the NDP kind) at the rooftop of our kukup stay! (With additional charge of about 50sgd)
Scenery there is crazy too! Sea + sunset (the sun looks like egg yolk) ☀️ #weekendgetaway #Malaysia #kukup #fireworks

Strolling on the boardwalk with shady mangrove trees above you make an easy walk to the Southern tip of Mainland Asia. Located at Tanjung Piai National Park, 45 minutes driving time via the new bridge from Johor Bahru City, this National Park is very accessible.
