Commissioned by King Anawrahta, the founder of the Bagan Empire, in the 11th century.
Completed by his son, King Kyansittha, making it one of the earliest and most important pagodas built in the Burmese style.
Said to enshrine relics of the Buddha, including a tooth, collarbone, and frontlet bone.
