Arriving in Kinugawa at night, I could feel its desolation. The streets were empty, the streetlights were dim, and the restaurants had closed early. Only the convenience store near the hot spring hotels was open. If you plan to stay overnight next time, I would recommend choosing a hotel that includes dinner, so you don't have to worry about where to eat. The next morning presented a different scene, with beautiful and bright scenery. Okukinu Onsen Kaniyu is one of the most impressive hot springs on this trip to Japan. Lake Chuzenji is in Nikko National Park in the city of Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. It is located at the foot of Mount Nantai. There are many activites that you can do; swan rides, kayaking, sightseeing boat cruise, etc. We went late fall, and unfortunately, most of the leaves were gone. The Red Bridge or Shinkyo Bridge is a bridge with a long history dating back to 1636. The bridge is made of wood coated with red resin, located in the middle of a valley above the Daiya River, surrounded by trees and beautiful nature. It was registered as a world heritage site in 1999 and is ranked as one of the top 3 most beautiful bridges in Japan! This bridge can be visited all year round, but people like to visit it during the autumn leaves season or from October to November. Let me tell you, the real thing is much more beautiful than the picture! . 🚄 Travel (using Tokyo Wide Pass) 1. Take the Shinkansen from Ueno Station and get off at Utsunomiya Station. 2. Change to the JR Nikko Line and get off at Nikko Station. 3. Take the Tobu Nikko bus from in front of JR Station for 7 stops and get off at Shinkyo Station. It takes about 9 minutes and costs 220¥. 👉 For those who want to stop by many places and will also go to Lake Chuzenji, we recommend buying a 2-day pass for 2,300¥, which is more worthwhile than the round-trip bus ticket. (You can buy the pass at the Tourist Information Center in JR Station. There will be an uncle on duty to provide advice and teach you how to read the bus schedule. Nikko!! Nikko is a small city in Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture, in the mountains north of Tokyo. It’s the site of Toshogu, the famed Shinto shrine and a lavish memorial for Tokugawa Ieyasu, founding ruler of the Tokugawa shogunate, or Edo Period. Cool weather, quiet environment and beautiful landscape make Nikko to be one of the most accessible day trip from Tokyo, especially to me who don’t like Tokyo crowds , I always try to go out from the city to escape . Nikko have everything that Japan represents for , ancient temples and shrine , mountains, lake and waterfalls. As the person, who like to hike and explore Japan rural landscape, this is the best choice I have made , and also my dream Kumano Kodo trials continuation of mount yoshino and mount koyasan. Actually, this area can get crowded when you come late ( late meant you each here by 10-11 am) but to me as a early bird , I always try to take first train , so when I reach to Nikko , I am one of a few who took first local bus to explore the area without crowd. If you have JR pass , all transportation from Tokyo to Nikko are covered by the pass except for local bus . There is three different bus route to explore the area, depend on what you are interested to . Bus -A explore temples and shrine areas . Bus -B explore onsen areas and Bus -C explore waterfall , lake and hiking trails start . Since I am early than first bus, I explore temples area by foot and wait for Bus C to follow waterfall and lake. One important reminder is , take photo of the buses timing , and come back in time if you don’t want miss and waited long time , sometimes you might even miss last bus 🤭🤭. Then you have to walk for 20-30 km to the station 😝😝. Make sure you put in your calendar to visit Nikko once you are in East side of Japan .
