Named for the Tao River within its borders, Lintao has been a renowned town in the northwest since ancient times, a strategic stronghold in Longyou, and one of the important cradles of the ancient Yellow River culture. It is also the southern gateway to Lanzhou and a key node of the 'Lanzhou-Baiyin economic zone'. Here lies the unique Majiayao culture, with its site located at the mouth of Mayu Gully on the west bank of the Tao River in Majiayao Village, Lintao County. In 1924, Johan Gunnar Andersson came to this place and discovered its unique ancient cultural site, unearthing a large number of painted pottery vessels.
