Spend 3 days in these cities for the mini holiday – crowd-free and hassle-free, as tested by us
For the Mid-Autumn mini holiday, these 8 cities are perfect for a 3-day stay
01 Yanbian | Jilin
In Yanbian, the very name "Korean" alone offers enough variety to keep you eating something different for 3 days. Don't sleep in – head to the morning market early. Steaming rice sausage, rice cake, and spicy fish soup fill the table, and for about 20 yuan per person, you'll be stuffed. After eating, head straight to Liuding Mountain Cultural Tourism Area. Climb to the top to see the Great Buddha – the view is wide open and the breeze is pleasant.
⏰ Go in the morning for the best light and to avoid backlit photos. Head back downtown in the afternoon for a cold noodle place, paired with sweet and sour pork. The tangy-sweet flavor with cool buckwheat noodles is the right way to experience Yanbian.
⚠️ Note: Many small shops close at 2 PM, so don't go right before closing time. In the evening, try a Korean-style sauna. Find a public bathhouse locals frequent, get a scrub, and wash it down with some rice wine – you'll feel completely relaxed. Three days isn't long, but it's enough to fall in love with the local vibe here.
02 Liuzhou | Guangxi
Liuzhou isn't just about luosifen, but luosifen is definitely the soul of the city. On day one, skip the attractions and find an old shop in an alley. Order two liang of noodles with duck feet and a braised egg, add chili oil to your liking. You'll be sweating by the end – it's that good. In the afternoon, head to Longtan Park. Karst landscapes paired with wind and rain bridges, where locals stroll and bring their kids. Admission is free, and a leisurely walk takes about an hour. Day two is for Chengyang Eight Villages. It's about 1.5 hours by car from downtown. Wind and rain bridges, drum towers, and stilted houses – full Dong ethnic charm.
⏰ Stay overnight in the village. When evening cooking smoke rises, the whole village goes quiet – it's much more beautiful than during the day. In the evening, try Dong-style sour fish with sticky rice. The sourness whets the appetite, and the fish, raised in rice paddies, has firm flesh. On day three, head back to the city and walk along the Liujiang River. The riverside path is well-maintained, and it's even better for a stroll after the lights come on at night.
⚠️ Don't queue at trendy luosifen shops. Any place with lots of locals will be just as good.
03 Xinyang | Henan
Xinyang is the "south" of Henan – that's absolutely true. The moment you step off the train, the air is full of moisture and the scent of osmanthus flowers. Jigong Mountain is the main attraction. Stay on the mountain for a night instead of going back the same day. The international architecture complex on the mountain is fascinating – dozens of Western-style villas hidden in the woods, like stepping back into another era.
⏰ Get up at 6 AM to see the sea of clouds. If you're lucky, you'll see clouds rolling at your feet, and when the sun comes out, golden light floods the valley. After coming down, head to Nanwan Lake for fish. The Nanwan fish head stew has broth as white as milk and is incredibly fresh.
⚠️ The temperature difference on the mountain is significant. Even in September, bring a light jacket – it gets chilly in the evening. Find any hot dry noodle shop downtown. Xinyang's version has a richer sesame paste flavor than Wuhan's. Pair it with a bowl of egg rice wine, and breakfast is sorted. Three days of hiking, eating fish, and strolling through old streets – the pace is just right.
04 Zhuzhou | Hunan
Zhuzhou is an underrated city – don't just treat it as a transit point. On day one, visit the Mausoleum of Emperor Yandi. It's about an hour from downtown. The site is large, with ancient cypress trees and bustling incense offerings.
⏰ Go in the morning. After touring, have a farmhouse meal nearby – blood duck, stuffed tofu, and stir-fried beef with yellow chili. The fragrant spiciness of Hunan cuisine is on full display here. Head back downtown in the afternoon for a walk along the Xiangjiang River. See the night view from Shennong Tower – city lights reflecting on the river, more beautiful than you'd imagine.
⚠️ Tickets to the Mausoleum of Emperor Yandi aren't cheap, but the site is huge. Allow 2–3 hours to walk the whole area, and wear comfortable shoes. On day two, head to Liling. The ceramics valley is worth seeing, with various porcelain exhibitions. You can even try your hand at throwing clay – an afternoon of fun. In the evening, have BBQ back in Zhuzhou. Hunan BBQ is all about charcoal fire and cumin. Beef skewers, grilled eggplant, and chives with a bottle of ice-cold beer – perfect. Zhuzhou has a slow pace, ideal for a relaxed 2-day stay.
05 Longnan | Gansu
Longnan is Gansu's exception – no vast deserts, just lush mountains and green waters. Wenxian Tianchi (Heavenly Lake) is hidden deep in the mountains, its water so green it looks blue, like a giant emerald.
⏰ You must go on a clear day. On cloudy or rainy days, the fog is too thick to see anything. It takes over 2 hours from downtown, and the road is winding. If you get carsick easily, take medication beforehand. Guanyegou is another highlight, known as "Little Jiuzhaigou." Waterfalls, lakes, and primeval forests – you'll be stopping to take photos the whole way. It's quite physically demanding.
⚠️ The boardwalks in the valley are slippery. Wear non-slip shoes, not sandals. There are farm stays at the foot of the mountain – basic but clean. Try a meal of wild mountain vegetables: bracken fern, bamboo shoots, and cured meat – flavors you can't find in the city. Longnan is famous for its walnuts and olive oil. Take some back as souvenirs. Three days is enough for two attractions – don't overpack, as the mountain roads are tiring to drive.
06 Zhanjiang | Guangdong
Zhanjiang is a city fed by seafood. On day one, head straight to Xiashan Seafood Market in the evening. Pick your own seafood and have it cooked at a nearby processing stall. Mantis shrimp, oysters, and flower crabs – boiled, salt-and-pepper, or garlic-flavored. For about 100 yuan per person, you'll eat until you're full. On day two, visit Huguangyan, a volcanic crater lake. The water is crystal clear. A full loop around the lake takes about 2 hours, and the air is so fresh it feels like a lung cleanse.
⏰ Head to Jinsha Bay in the evening for sunset. The sand isn't fine, but the view is open and the breeze is pleasant.
⚠️ Processing stalls at the seafood market charge a cooking fee. Confirm the price before ordering to avoid being overcharged. On day three, explore Chikan Old Street. The arcade buildings have a strong Southeast Asian vibe. Wander around, take photos, and stop at a dessert shop for a bowl of mung bean soup. In the afternoon, head to the pier for a boat to Techeng Island, where the mangroves and fishing village are worth seeing. Zhanjiang's pace is slow – perfect for unwinding. Don't over-schedule.
07 Chifeng | Inner Mongolia
Autumn in Chifeng is golden. The Hashatu Stone Forest Scenic Area might sound unfamiliar, but the moment you see those jagged rock formations, you'll understand – nature's craftsmanship is more awe-inspiring than you imagined.
⏰ Go in the morning. The angled light on the stone pillars highlights the textures, making for great photos. It's windy in the scenic area, and late September is already cool, so bring a fleece jacket. In the afternoon, take a spin around the nearby grasslands. The grass is starting to turn yellow, but the sense of vastness is still breathtaking.
⚠️ There are no restaurants in the scenic area. Bring your own water and snacks – don't hike the whole way on an empty stomach. In the evening, head back to the city for lamb hot pot. Chifeng's lamb has no gamey taste. Dip it in sesame sauce, and pair it with freshly baked Mongolian buns – pure satisfaction. Three days: one for the stone forest, one for the grasslands, and the last for eating and drinking around the city. Perfect.
08 Dandong | Liaoning
Dandong is a city with stories, but let's just focus on what to do. Fenghuang Mountain is a must-visit. The terrain is steep – the Laoniubei section is almost vertical, requiring hands and feet to climb. Not for the faint of heart.
⏰ Start climbing at 7 AM and get down before noon to avoid the crowds. After descending, head to Kuandian Hekou, a small village by the Yalu River. In autumn, maple leaves and ginkgo trees cover the mountains – unbelievably beautiful. Lvjiang Village is further, but worth the trip. The river winds around the village. Get up early to see the morning mist – it looks like an ink painting.
⚠️ The road to Lvjiang Village isn't great. Don't drive there with a low-clearance car. The Yalu River Broken Bridge is lit up at night. Standing on the bridge looking at the other side, with the river breeze blowing, you'll be filled with emotion. Dandong's seafood is also excellent. The yellow clams are plump and taste best grilled. Three days covering mountains, rivers, and villages – a trip well spent.
