2025 Kyushu Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in April)

One of the most anticipated transportation experiences during my visit to Kyushu, Japan, was taking the popular sightseeing train "Yufuin-no-Mori" from Hakata to Yufuin and Beppu in Oita Prefecture. The booking process for this train is actually very simple. I selected the departure time and seat through the official website of JR Kyushu, and received a confirmation email after payment. After boarding the Yufuin-no-Mori train, the atmosphere in the entire carriage made me feel very relaxed. The interior of the train has a strong European and elegant style. There are many pictures of Yufuin scenery and some exquisite details on the decoration. Walking in it feels like walking in the forest. The overall atmosphere makes people feel very comfortable. There are many facilities on the train and a variety of meals are provided to make the ride more enriching. I specially ordered the "Yufuin Wheeled Rice" for 1,000 yen (tax included). The portion was generous and the taste was quite delicious, which made me even happier when I enjoyed it in the car. Overall, the ride on the Yufuin Forest was very pleasant. Whether it was the comfortable carriage or the beautiful scenery outside the window, this trip was full of memories. Driving from Fukuoka to Kurokawa Onsen, passing through Oguni Town, I accidentally found a popular soba noodle restaurant #手打そば優心. Although it is a rural area, it has good business. If you don't make an appointment, you have to wait for half an hour. I wandered around nearby. While visiting, I unexpectedly visited the #Oguni Shrine with its towering ancient trees, and the #Keyaki Water Source along the Sakura River. The shop of Shouda Soba Youxin is very Zen-like, decorated with a row of wooden fences. Inside is an L-shaped workbench. Sitting in the tatami seating area, you can watch the noodle cooking process up close, from rolling the noodles, putting them in the pot, chilling them, adding ingredients, The chef's skillful plating is really brilliant and interesting. We ordered a tempura set and a beef rice bowl. The cold buckwheat noodles were served in a bamboo sieve and dipped in the sauce. They were smooth and slurpy. If you want a special experience, you can take a boat tour along the park's river and feel like you are in Amsterdam. In addition to the observation tower, there are other novel ways to overlook the entire resort. You can experience a 20-meter-high bungee jump above the Art Garden and get a whole new perspective on the park from an upside-down perspective. The resort is divided into two areas: the theme park area and the harbor area. Both areas have free attractions and paid attractions, with most of the attractions located in the theme park area. Regular tickets give you access to both areas, but you can also buy a separate ticket for cheaper entry to the harbour area only. (Because my teammate was having his birthday on that day, I bought two tickets online during the train trip as a gift for my friend.) Tips: If a passenger enters the venue on his/her birthday, he/she will receive a birthday sticker and a free drink. Huis Ten Bosch has multiple JR train services between Hakata (Fukuoka) and Nagasaki. Most trains are limited express and most trains from Hakata require a transfer at nearby Hayaki Station, so expect the journey to take up to 110 minutes. Kyushu Natural Zoo ~ Must-See Attractions in Kyushu Just a year ago, I visited Jiuzhou Nature Zoo in March 2020 and bought my tickets and animal tickets in advance. There is an animal cart every half hour, you can arrive at the station at the right time to wait for the bus, a carriage can seat about 20 people, each group of people will be allocated a pot of food for feeding animals. There will be staff in the car to introduce in Japanese throughout the process. If you don't know how to listen to Japan, you can know which food for the animal to eat by looking at the instructions on hand. The tour takes about 30-45 minutes. After getting off, you can interact with the small animals at the zoo in the park. There are also several restaurants in the park to treat the stomach, we chose a small Honya-shaped Western restaurant, which tasted good and was reasonably priced. I used the one-day train ticket to visit the Atomic Bomb Museum, the Atomic Bomb Park, the Peace Memorial Park, the Spectacles Bridge, the Shinchi Chinatown, the night view of Mt. Inasa, the Oura Catholic Church and other attractions. On the other day, we took a leisurely stroll around Nagasaki Harbor as the sun set, and ended up eating and shopping at Kanko-dori Shopping Street. We also brought back Nagasaki's famous Bunmeido honey cake as a souvenir. There are currently no direct flights from Taiwan to Nagasaki. You can take a direct bus to Nagasaki city after entering from Fukuoka and start your trip to Nagasaki!

My two-week self-drive trip through Kyushu was an unforgettable experience, showcasing a different side of Japan beyond the usual Tokyo and Osaka itineraries. Starting in Fukuoka, I indulged in the city’s famous Hakata ramen, with Hakata Issou serving up one of the best bowls I’ve ever had. From there, I drove to Nagasaki, a city rich in history and culture, before heading to Kumamoto, home to the impressive Kumamoto Castle. One of the highlights was visiting Mount Aso, where breathtaking volcanic landscapes stretched as far as the eye could see. The journey continued to the charming onsen towns of Kurokawa, Yufuin, and Beppu, each offering a unique hot spring experience that made for the perfect way to unwind. These towns had a distinct charm, with traditional ryokan stays, open-air baths, and serene nature all around. Along the way, I was constantly in awe of Kyushu’s stunning scenery, from rolling hills and lush forests to coastal views and steaming onsens. Unlike the bustling cities of Tokyo and Osaka, Kyushu offered a more relaxed and immersive travel experience, filled with natural beauty, rich history, and incredible food. This time we took a sightseeing boat cruise and took a bus to the Zhankai Peak where you can overlook the Kujuku Islands. 2. Jiuchongmeng Suspension Bridge (Figure 3-4) The Kokonoe Yume Suspension Bridge is one of the famous attractions in Oita Prefecture. It is the highest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan and spans the Kokonoe Gorge. 3. Tianlai Hot Spring (Figure 5-9) From Hakata, go to Hita, then take a local train from Hita to Teina Station. When you exit Teina Station, there are hand and foot baths at the exit. There are also open-air hot springs, so you need to bring your own swimsuit. 4. Hita (Figure 10-13) Located in the north of the Aso Kuju Mountains, water from the mountains flows into Hita. The abundant water resources have earned Hita the name "Water Town." What impressed me most were the boat-shaped houses by the water, the beautiful sunset, and the delicious Chinese ramen.
