2025 Kundasang Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in May)

Accommodation is always a major issue when planning a trip or vacation. You can choose a hotel, apartment, cabin, hostel, or homestay, and whatever you decide, I'm pretty sure it's not just about cost, but also about facilities and location. Any traveler likes to stay in a clean place with basic amenities, beautiful views, and good prices. When we planned to visit Kundasang, the choice wasn't easy. In the end, I chose Hounon Ridge Farmstay and Camping. You may ask, what does Hounon mean? According to the manager, Hounon means "shrouded in mist" in the local language. The name really suits the place because every morning and evening I was there, it was shrouded in thick fog, and you couldn't even see the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. There are many other special things about Hounon Ridge Farmstay and Camping: it is located in a tropical rainforest ecosystem, with lush tropical greenery and a night sky full of twinkling stars. Hounon Ridge Farmstay and Camping is located in Kampung Himbaan, Bundu Tuhan, Ranau. The farmstay is 9 km from Puncak Borneo Resort, 11 km from Kinabalu Park, 16 km from Kundasang, and 100 km from Kota Kinabalu. To get there, you have to turn off the road to Kundasang at the junction to Bundu Tuhan. This road will take you to Kampung Bundu Tuhan, passing Don Bosco Children's Home, Kampung Himbaan, and St. Valentine's Church. From there, you can ask the villagers for directions. The easiest way is to have a working GPS! If you rent a car, make sure it's in good condition, and because you'll be going downhill a lot, be sure to use a low gear to prevent the brakes from overheating.

Join a day tour to Kundasang in Sabah. Although we didn't challenge the summit, this leisurely trip allowed me to experience the richness and natural charm of the surrounding attractions. Early in the morning, we departed from the city, and the scenic drive was picturesque. The winding mountain roads gradually took us away from the hustle and bustle of the city, replaced by lush tropical rainforests and magnificent mountain views. As the car approached Kinabalu National Park, the towering peaks suddenly came into view, making us marvel at the grandeur of nature. The first stop of the itinerary was the Kundasang Botanical Garden. Here, I saw many rare plants, including the carnivorous pitcher plants unique to Sabah, and beautiful orchids. The guide's explanation was very interesting, telling us that Kundasang is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. The survival strategies and environmental adaptability of these plants left me in awe. Next, we arrived at Poring Hot Springs. The hot springs here are said to have soothing effects on the body and mind. I took off my shoes and dipped my feet into the warm spring water, instantly feeling all my fatigue wash away. There was also a canopy walk, which was my favorite experience. Standing on the high suspension bridge overlooking the entire forest, I felt both nervous and excited. The gentle breeze through the treetops brought an indescribable sense of peace. Lunch was at a local restaurant, where simple Malay cuisine made us feel warm and satisfied. Afterward, we visited the Desa Cattle Dairy Farm, known as 'Little New Zealand.' The cows grazing on the meadows and the distant view of Kundasang made the photos look like postcards. Tasting the local fresh milk and cheese ice cream was the perfect ending to this trip. Although this day trip was relaxing, I gained a deeper understanding of the nature and culture around Kundasang. Next time I visit Sabah, I hope to have the opportunity to challenge the summit and personally experience the thrill of looking down on the world from above.

For the first timer who would want to witness beautiful sunrise, I strongly recommend you to find a guide to ensure a smooth hike. 2. Package : Sunrise (3am) or day trip (6am). I choose sunrise so I need to be at the registration centre by 3am. 3. Price: rm85/pax including the transport from registration centre to the entrance, guide fee. 4. Experience : the trail is not really long but it’s no-less than challenging. Along the way, I encountered some steep hills and some area are uneven. Make sure that you’re bringing a headlamp (it’s all dark in the woods) and put on a windbreaker/ sweater that can keep you warm as it’s super chilly, even more chilly when you’re at the peak. The entire trail took me about 1h15min. By the time I arrived the peak, it’s around 445am, in which the sunrise is about it 530am-6am, so I waited for the sunrise. As the time passes, the scenery slowly turned vivid and I’m astonished by the utter natural beauty, I see fluffy sea of clouds at one side and once I turned around, the ginormous Mount Kinabalu is right in front of my eyes. I’m so grateful for the stunning views and it’s so worth it. The descend took me about 50min so the entire routine can be finished by latest 8am. And you can have a good breakfast to replenish your energy ✨ 5. Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It was my first ever trip to the East Malaysia, it’s so exciting to finally visit the land below the wind- Sabah. I’m honoured to witness the Mount Kinabalu in Kundasang, the fact that I’m already above 2000m sea level in Kundasang and seeing that even prominent and magnificent mountain is truly a stunning sight to behold. One of the activities to do in Kundasang is definitely to take a thrilling and adventurous ATV ride while enjoying the scenic view of the mountains⛰️. Secondly, take a sunrise climb to Maragang hill and you’ll be amazed by the beautiful sunrise and sea of clouds ☁️ do bring a headlamp and put on a windbreaker as it’s super chilling up there. Last but not least, you must not missed out the Desa Dairy farm which you could enjoy the fresh and yummy yogurt and milk. Also, you can try feeding the cattle with grass and milk. One of the highlights is they offers newly packed milk at the cafe( I love chocolate & coffee flavour), and you can also enjoys flavourful Gelato ice-cream. Visit to the Desa Cattle Dairy Farm are currently limited to three sessions daily with a limited number of visitors per each session. Spring Garden Kundasang is a picturesque located in the highlands of Sabah. The garden is open for public with an admission fee of RM10.00 per person. The garden is beautiful and offering a variety of flowers. There is also a short easy hiking trails to a river/waterfall. The garden is well maintained, clean and staffs are very friendly. Definitely a lovely experience and worth a visit.

Entrance fee was RM 10 but they do not really have specific/ designated parking area for this park so take note on which time, date or day that are more busy (such holiday) for you to avoid the crowd. You may park alongside the road and there was also, one small cleared area where I saw several cars being parked (not sure if that was an official parking area). Also, it is a very small road driving up here, do pay extra careful on the road.

DH.MEMORIAL PARK 001 The Kundasang War Memorial is dedicated to the British and Australian soldiers who lost their lives during their death marches from Sandakan POW camp to Ranau. Getting There - Took about 2hours 15minutes by car form Kota Kinabalu City center depending on the traffic flow. Attractions: - 1. The Australian Garden 2. The English Rose Garden 3. The Borneo Garden 4. The Contemplation Garden Hotels - I would recommend to stay at The Cottage Hotel which only took about 5minutes drive. Food & Restaurants - There are many restaurants nearby. #malaysia We reached there at 6am and the sky is already bright but the sun is still hiding behind the mountain. By the time we reach the viewing platform the sun is out. I believe dawn is the best time to be there as there is not many visitors and you can catch the best sky light view very clear view of the mountain. The climb is slightly tough for veterans but was ok for me. Entrance fee of RM5 is really worthy for the view we catched. One of the must visit place in kundasang! To get there, follow Google maps or waze directions and park at the hill entrance. There’s a ticket booth right at infront of the entrance.

#mymymemories with my family to Kundasang. We went hiking the sosodikon hill to see the sunrise. Worth waking up early to hike! We able to see the sunrise and Mount Kinabalu! We stayed at Ausvilla , highly recommend if you're coming with family of 6-8. Comfy house and rooms, most important Mount Kinabalu view! #kundasang The best ever place with good facilities eg : cooking, bbq, room service.. once arrive, the lamp not function well.. they take fast action while received the complain..money cant buy the best ever scenery , moment …From the moment we entered the hotel lobby, we were impressed. The interior decor was luxurious yet warm and inviting. The family room that we booked was spacious and clean with comfortable double beds and linens. The room was overlooking the mountain which had a fabulous view. There is a kettle, a small fridge and a large TV which we loved. The bathroom was nicely decorated with unique tiles. They provided plush towels and top of the line toiletry sets which they would replace every day.
