All Moments About Kamikatsu
In the midst of nature, a local craft beer brewery suddenly appears.
📍RISE & WIN Brewing Co.
Here, you can enjoy authentic craft beer along with grilled dishes made from fresh vegetables from Tokushima Prefecture.
You can experience the world of KAMIKATZ in a space designed with a zero-waste concept.
In the mountains of Kamikatsu Town, Tokushima Prefecture, a uniquely shaped building suddenly appears.
Its peculiar appearance makes a striking impact on the surrounding tranquil scenery, but upon closer inspection, it’s fascinating to see that it uses a lot of charming wood that surprisingly matches the environment.
Upon even closer inspection, you’ll notice that the wood used is repurposed from window frames and tables. These materials were collected from the waste station in Kamikatsu Town.
Recently, many brewers from overseas have been visiting to brew beer here. Among them are some unusual beers that you wouldn't normally encounter. For example, there are Gose beers that use a large amount of salt harvested from Tokushima's seawater, and beers made with Mexican chili and citrus from Kamikatsu. It’s interesting to see how local ingredients and the creativity of foreign brewers come together in this lab-like environment.
The food offered here is also highly recommended to pair with the beer!
Be sure to enjoy a sophisticated time here.
[Tokushima Prefecture] Experience a mini pilgrimage at a famous moss spot! "Yamainudake"
Kamikatsu Town, about 42km southwest of Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture
"Yamainudake" is a small hill with an elevation of 997.6m, with an entrance on the outskirts of a small village in the mountains, far from civilization.
It is said that the name came from the fact that there used to be a rock on top of the mountain that looked like a wild dog howling at the sky (it has now collapsed and is no longer there).
Yamainudake is one of the most famous moss spots in Japan, with a landscape of giant rocks and countless sphagnum moss spreading out in the virgin forest.
In addition, along the mountain path, stone Buddha statues of the "Mini Shikoku 88 Temples" are enshrined, creating a solemn atmosphere.
You can also enjoy a little pilgrimage atmosphere.
Near the peak is Daishido/Ryuozan Tokoji Temple, but it is uninhabited.
The peak is not open and there is no view. There is only a small shrine enshrined.
In any case, it is a must-see for moss lovers, but
although it is a beginner's climb, the climb on the way there is physically exhausting. Light clothing is prohibited, so visit with light mountain climbing equipment.

Tokushima Zero Waste Center
I visited the 'Kamikatsu Zero Waste Center' in Kamikatsu Town, Tokushima!
📍 7-2 Shimohira, Fukuhara, Kamikatsu-cho, Katsuura-gun, Tokushima Prefecture
This place has been featured in architectural magazines and Nikkei Architecture, and I've always wanted to visit. I even participated in a study tour. The main feature of this complex is the town's waste station! Originally, it was a place for open burning and incinerators. Now, even though it's a waste collection site, only a small portion of the waste is landfilled or incinerated. Most of it is recycled, and items that can still be used can be taken home! There is also a reuse shop called Kurukuru Shop! While only town residents can bring items in, anyone from outside the town can take items home for reuse!
The Kamikatsu Zero Waste Center.
The first zero-waste eco-hotel 'HOTEL WHY' is part of the 'Kamikatsu Zero Waste Center.' Kamikatsu Town in Katsuura District declared its goal of achieving zero waste in 2003, becoming the first municipality in Japan to do so. This led to the construction of the 'Kamikatsu Zero Waste Center,' aiming to create a sustainable zero-waste society. The center uses discarded windows and various local building materials from Kamikatsu to minimize pollution from transportation. The design is also interesting, allowing visitors to connect with nature and learn about waste sorting.
HOTEL WHY
HOTEL WHY is located in Kamikatsu, Tokushima Prefecture, known as 'Japan's Most Beautiful Village.' It is the world's first zero-waste eco-hotel, constructed using locally harvested cedar wood and discarded farming tools. The hotel's exterior forms a question mark shape, in harmony with the Kamikatsu Zero Waste Center. During your stay, soap is cut to the required amount, ensuring maximum eco-friendliness. The hotel also offers activities such as canoeing and fishing on the lake, providing a relaxing and leisurely experience.

Popular Kamikatsu Topics
Tonogawa Valley
Located in Kamikatsu-cho, the Tenkawa Uchi Valley is 800 meters high, the river is crystal clear, and the leaves on both sides turn bright red with autumn, making it best to feel the distinct changes of the four seasons in Japan. The natural scenery is breathtaking and designated as one of the Central Mountain Creek Prefectural Nature Parks. It is part of the longest forest road in Japan, the "Kamyama Super Forest Road", and you can see the 30-meter "Hundred Man Falls" up close.

Mount Inugadake
Located above the Kashihara Terraced Rice Fields, Mount Inugadake is a famous moss spot in Tokushima Prefecture. The moss grows most lushly from July to October each year. The most captivating feature is the space created by the vast moss forest, giant rocks, and sunlight, which is very dreamy. The name comes from the 997.6-meter-high peak of Mount Inugadake, which resembled a mountain dog opening its mouth before it collapsed. The nearest parking lot is about 30 minutes from the trailhead, and it takes about an hour and a half to hike to the summit.
