Our family decided to take on the challenge of visiting the Dambulla Cave Temple, a famous Buddhist site in Sri Lanka. To reach the temple, we had to climb a long flight of stairs. Although the journey was a bit strenuous for our elderly family members, and they almost couldn't make it, when we reached the top and saw the magnificent temple and the breathtaking views, all the fatigue was worth it. Sri Lanka is not only well known for tea plantations but also the many historic relics, scriptures, temples and tombs. One place where it is a must visit is the Dambulla Royal Cave Tample and Golden Temple located at Jaffna Hwy, Dambulla. This is a very popular tourists attractions since this is named as one of the world heritage site. I am not sure why but most temples have insane amount of steps where this has 364 steps to reach the Cave. And of course, in most temples you are to show respect to the gods where you are required to cover anything below your hips and do remember to bring sarong or sari I did not see any stores selling these stuff. Sri Lanka Travel Diary, February 21, 2025, Day 6 in Sri Lanka. Years of experience have taught me to let go while traveling and not obsess over checking off every tourist spot. Today, I gave up the idea of climbing the mountain opposite Sigiriya before dawn to watch the sunrise and take cool photos. I had to deal with a tire issue caused by a tuk-tuk driver the previous night. I used Google Maps to find a highly-rated car repair shop in Dambulla. The photos made it look professional, and it had many reviews. The owner spoke excellent English and had a mechanic check the tire. It seemed fine, but they took it in for a closer inspection, inflated it, and told me there was no problem. The mechanic even helped me remove the spare tire and put the regular tire back on. I asked the owner if he'd encountered situations where foreigners' cars were damaged. He said no, but acknowledged that bad things do happen. When he heard we paid 1,000 rupees (USD 25) for the spare tire change, he shrugged. The average monthly income in this country is only USD 120. I asked him how much the repair cost, and he said, "Free." What a kind person! I quickly gave the shop a five-star rating on Google Maps and left a positive review. I missed out on the Instagram-worthy photo spot, but I met a great person. For me, travel stories are more interesting than checking off any tourist attraction. Years from now, I may not remember the scenery of a particular Sri Lankan landmark, but I will definitely remember the stories of interacting with the locals. After the car was fixed, I still had some time, so I made a last-minute decision to visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, a World Heritage Site, which wasn't originally on my itinerary. After climbing four hundred steps, I reached the top of the rock where several caves had been carved out, containing brightly colored Buddha statues. There were many Western and local visitors. Everyone had to enter barefoot, and the ground was scorching hot from the sun. At noon, I arrived at Heritance Kandalama, the only five-star hotel on this trip. Recommended by National Geographic as one of the "50 Best Hotels in the World," it's a masterpiece by Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's national treasure architect. Bawa is considered one of the most influential architects of the 20th century and a pioneer of tropical modernism. When I opened the door to my room, a mother monkey and her baby were on the balcony—absolutely adorable! I quickly went for a swim. The view from the main pool was stunning. Lying by the pool, I could see the reservoir and Sigiriya in the distance. In the evening, an old man played the flute on a rock. The hotel is enveloped by plants and incorporates many large rocks into its design, creating open spaces where swallows flit in and out. Although it's 31 years old, it's still very comfortable. For dinner, we chose a four-course set menu, priced at USD 240, and the quality was excellent. If there's anything to complain about, it's the price, which has doubled since before the pandemic and increased by 40–50% compared to a year or two ago, depending on the season. If you choose upscale hotels and restaurants in this country, it's no longer cheap. This doesn't correlate with the local economic level. Because of their past financial crisis and need for US dollars, most accommodations require payment in USD. All entrance fees for foreigners are also very high.

What is even more amazing is the elephant dung paper workshop, which turns waste into exquisite notebooks, and even the air is filled with the fragrance of grass and wood fibers. ### II. Echoes from the Depths of History The Galle Fort at dusk is a living specimen of colonial history. The Dutch-style white lighthouse and the ruins of the Portuguese fortress converse in the sunset, and Muslim headscarves and sari skirts pass over the cobblestone streets. Local teenagers fly kites on the city walls, and the kite strings connect the 16th-century turrets with the 21st-century cafes. The colonial scars are finally smoothed by the sea breeze into a cultural sedimentary rock. The night at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy is a flowing theater of faith. During the Esala Perahera procession, gold- and silver-clad elephants carry the sacred object box slowly forward, and the dancers' swirling skirts are like peacock screens in the sound of drums and music. Believers walk barefoot with lotus flowers in their hands, and the faces illuminated by candlelight overlap with the outlines of pilgrims in the murals thousands of years ago. When the car travels to the coastline, the waves of the Indian Ocean suddenly crash into view, and the elephants leave deep footprints on the beach, which are smoothed by the tide, as if nature is writing sand paintings. The afternoon on the sea train is full of magical realism. The carriage door is always open, the salty sea breeze blows up a corner of the sari, and the locals hand over the sweetness of golden coconuts and spicy curry horns. When the rails and the coastline are almost overlapping, the waves can almost splash on the car windows, and the dream of Spirited Away comes true here. Children chase the train and run, and the laughter is sent by the sea breeze to the tea gardens in the clouds. ### IV. Time Wrinkles in the Fragrance of Tea The tea gardens of Nuwara Eliya hide old British dreams. Victorian buildings are covered with wisteria, and the postcards in the pink post office carry greetings across time and space. At the Mackwoods Tea Factory, the tea pickers' fingertips flutter like butterflies, the newly picked tea greens are spread out on bamboo plaques, and the fermentation room is filled with the mellow fragrance of wood. Sip Ceylon black tea lightly, watch the sea of clouds pass over the mountains, and then you can understand the artistic conception of "tea color is like amber, and time is like condensed fat." At the time of parting, the gem market in Colombo is flashing slightly. The sapphire's azure blue, the moonstone's soft halo, and the cat's eye's agility are just like the multiple facets of this country—it embraces the tenacity of rebirth from the flames of war, and retains the purity of a child. Customs presses a lotus seal on the passport page, recalling what the old man in Kandy said: "Our history is written on palm leaves, and the future is hidden in the waves." What this land has taught me is to see new life in the ruins and to hear eternity in the hustle and bustle.

Sometimes it’s so difficult to imagine that so many years ago people were already able to create such masterpieces that are still kept till nowadays. We were so impressed by the beauty and atmosphere and the most impressive part for me was the ceilings: the art is continued on the ceilings of the rocks covering its natural shape. So unbelievably amazing.

#celebrateit Dambula Grotto Temple is the largest and well-preserved grotto temple in the country located in Dambula, central Sri Lanka, about a little over 30 minutes by car from Sigiriya Rock. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1991 because of its historical and cultural importance. It consists of five grottoes, and the huge nirvana statue with a total length of about 14 metres in the first cave "Grotto of the Holy King" lying all over the cave is a masterpiece. In the 2nd cave, you can see golden Buddha statues lined up narrowly and ceiling paintings painted with sparkling colours, and many golden Buddha statues can be seen in the 3rd to 5th caves.
