Clitheroe travel guide and discussion

📅 Itinerary Day1:Arrived in Langho and took it easy after the journey. Went for a wander near Dean’s Clough Reservoir, just outside the village, for some proper Lancashire countryside views. Settled in for the evening with dinner close to the hotel. Day2: Drove over to Whalley for the morning, had a look round Whalley Abbey ruins and the little shops on the main street. In the afternoon, headed to Clitheroe to check out the castle and walk round the market town. Stopped at a riverside pub on the way back for a pint with a view. Day3: Spent the morning in Blackburn itself, visited the Cathedral and had a walk through Witton Country Park before heading home. A relaxed last day after a busy weekend 🏨 Accommodation Stayed at Mytton Fold Hotel & Golf, right on Whalley Road in Langho. Comfortable, good value, and close to everything. If you want to splash out, Northcote does rooms above the restaurant too. 🍴 Food Recommendations The Three Fishes in Mitton for proper Lancashire pub food, Freemasons at Wiswell if you want something a bit more special, and Northcote if you’re celebrating and want to book well ahead. The Aspinall Arms in Whalley is great for a riverside lunch. 📌 Tips You’ll want a car as it’s all quite spread out and rural. Pack proper walking shoes, the paths around the reservoir get muddy fast. Book Northcote early if that’s on your list, it gets busy.

Stonyhurst is one of the most prestigious schools in the entire United Kingdom and is set in some of the most beautiful countryside in the entire country. The grounds around the school are also open to walkers where you can explore its woodland, following streams on their way towards the meandering River Ribble at the bottom of the valley. Along the route you can also visit the bridge which Oliver Cromwell and the New model army crossed on their route to the battle of Preston and on certain times of the year you can visit the Stonyhurst museum, the oldest in the English speaking world. #outdoors #lancashire

cloudy skies but overall a lovely location in the small market town of Clitheroe. Just a tad wet.

The town of Clitheroe in Lancashire’s Ribble Valley is towered over by the ruins of a medieval castle famous for its roles in both the war of the roses and the English civil war. Today the castle stands in ruins but provides fantastic views of the surrounding hills and valleys and provides a fascinating insight into what life was once like here. For those looking to learn more about the local area the castle museum is a worthwhile visit. #2024mapped #castle #lancashire

There isn’t really many thing more quintessentially English than afternoon tea on a winter’s day with a view of the surrounding countryside. One of the best places we have found for this is in the small village of Chatburn just outside the Lancashire market town of Clitheroe. The cafe feels like you have walked into someone’s living room but the food and drink on offer is surprisingly modern with both fantastic service and welcoming hosts. A true gem #2024mapped

At the heart of Lancashire’s Ribble valley lies the delightful market town of Clitheroe. Towered over by its imposing castle the town has a true countryside feel with a wide variety of independent shops, cafes and restaurants for you to wander round. There’s also the castle itself to explore all backed up by fantastic views across both the forest of Bowland and Pendle Hill #2024mapped #lancashire

Britain is full of country pubs but if you’re looking for a real change from the normal, then heading to Clitheroe’s Holmes Mill may be just for you. This refurbished cotton mill is now home to a fantastic restaurant, a huge bar with its own brewery serving a wide selection of fantastic beers, a food hall serving high quality local and international produce and an upmarket cinema. There is also a wide amount of outdoor space for those warm summer afternoons. #magicalxmastrip

November in England can be quite a depressing month, which makes getting outdoor even more important. The chance to see the last of the Autumn colours whilst walking alongside a beautiful river can be found at one end of Lancashire’s Forest of Bowland. Starting at the village of Dunsop Bridge and following the River Hodder thorough fields and woodlands with views to the hills beyond, this gentle walk is the perfect way to break the month’s blues #voyagevibes
