#summerdream Scala dei Turchi, a mesmerizing coastal wonder, graces the Sicilian shoreline between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle in the province of Agrigento. Its name translates to “Stair of the Turks,” and this unique formation is anything but ordinary. Nature has meticulously shaped this dazzling white cliff over time. Composed of soft, calcareous marl, it curves sinuously, its terraces smoothed by salty breezes and the relentless sea. Azure waters contrast against the luminous rock, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Legend whispers that ancient Arab and Turkish marauders sought refuge in this bay, lending the site its evocative name. Today, we marvel at its beauty, but let us tread lightly—each fragment of this marl holds magic, not medicinal properties.

The Turkish Steps was our second stop in Agrigento. We took a bus from Agrigento's bus terminal (Piazzale Rosselli) and then walked for half an hour to the Turkish Steps (the bus runs are infrequent, so be sure to plan your time well~). Looking at the endless sea, it was really hard to imagine that we were at the southernmost tip of Italy, and that Africa was on the other side. The Turkish Steps are a type of sedimentary rock that was eroded by sea water and wind over the years to create a stair-like appearance. In the past, pirates would anchor their ships close to the shore and then climb up the Turkish Steps. Tourists are not allowed to climb the Turkish Steps now, otherwise they will be punished 🙅🏻♀️. The water here is very clear, probably because of the lower accessibility and relatively low number of tourists. In fact, I found during this trip that the water in the Italian beaches is very clear, and there is almost no garbage in the water or on the beaches. Even if some beaches are crowded, the sea water will not become dirty. One of the reasons is probably because the people and tourists here are willing to protect nature and earth resources🫶🏻🌱 After returning to Agrigento, we took a bus to Catania and continued our journey to the south. -To be continued- 🥪Panini recommendation - food truck near Catania Centrale (next to Stazione food) 🗣️We can choose one meat and three side dishes.
