The Strid on the River Wharfe on the Bolton Abbey estate has become famous in recent years by being labelled as the most dangerous river in the world. The legend goes that the young son of the owner of the nearby Skipton castle tried to jump the Strid with his dog but unfortunately fell as was taken down by the water leading to his mother giving the land to the monks who built the abbey itself. Whether or not the legend is true the water here is bout violent and incredibly deep with sonar measuring it as 65m. Ribblehead viaduct, is a railway viaduct and was completed in 1876 and was built to facilitate train travel between the cities of Settle and Carlisle. Ribblehead viaduct is a feet of Victorian engineering and is famous for its photogenic span of 24 stone archers.
