Córdoba, Spain - Roman Catholic church in Islamic mosque style
#church #100 ways to travel
Have you ever seen a mosque-style church? Located in Cordoba, southern Spain, there is such a unique #mosquemainchurch.
Southern Spain was once ruled by the Moors, who also brought Islamic architectural styles. The Cordoba Mosque was originally built by Islamic forces, and was gradually converted into a Roman Catholic church after it was recovered by Spain. However, it retained the original domes, arches, and red and white Islamic architecture, perfectly blending the essence of the two cultures. Characteristic.
The main church of Cordoba Mosque is located in the old city. It can be easily reached by taking a bus from Cordoba Station, or you can walk through the atrium green park and the old city wall, which takes about 15-20 minutes. The outer garden is full of citrus trees, with golden citrus trees growing there. It is really beautiful to take photos with the clock tower wall as the background.
You need to buy a ticket to visit the main church of the mosque. The entrance to the church is €11, the tower is €2, and the night guided tour is €18. According to online information, if you want to visit for free, you can visit the free area between 8:30 and 9:30 in the morning.
The streets in the old town of Cordoba are also quite unique. Every household will put potted flowers on the window sill to compete with each other to see who has the most beautiful display. There are also many beautiful Islamic-style gardens to visit, and it is worth arranging a day trip.

The Most Unique Church in Spain—Córdoba Cathedral.
Did you know that there is a church in Spain with distinct mosque features? During this trip to Europe, I visited many different churches. Although they were beautiful, most of them looked quite similar, which led to a bit of aesthetic fatigue 🫠. However, the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba (Catedral de Córdoba) in the Andalusia region of southern Spain is truly unique! It was a refreshing sight 🤍.
This church was originally built as a mosque by Muslims in 785 AD and was later converted into a church in the 16th century after the Christian conquest. It combines Islamic and Christian architectural styles, especially its famous red and white arches and the magnificent Baroque-style altar.
As soon as we walked in, we saw many red and white arches. Initially, I thought there were only a few, but it turns out the entire church is filled with arches. Under the sunlight, the colors of the arches become even more striking. It's perfect for photography 🤍. The church also houses many artworks and grand altars, making it well worth a visit!
We visited twenty different churches, and we unanimously agreed that this is one of the must-visit churches! It retains the features of a mosque while incorporating Christian elements. You won't feel any sense of discord; it's truly magical! If you visit Spain, I highly recommend heading to the south to see this culturally blended church ⛪️🕌.

AC Hotel Cordoba
The AC Hotel Cordoba was a great option for a one-night layover in the city. As advertised, it was an affordable option that didn't break the bank. Despite being a budget-friendly hotel, the accommodations were surprisingly comfortable and clean.
The room itself was more than sufficient for a brief stay. The bed was comfortable and provided a good night's rest, and the bathroom was clean and functional. The hotel also offered some basic amenities, such as free Wi-Fi and a TV.
One of the highlights of the AC Hotel Cordoba was its location. It was conveniently situated near the train station, which made it a great option for those with early morning train rides. Additionally, it was only a short distance from the city center, allowing guests to explore Cordoba's many attractions without having to travel too far.
Overall, the AC Hotel Cordoba was a solid choice for anyone looking for an affordable and comfortable place to stay in the city. While it may not offer the same level of luxury as some of the higher-end hotels in the area, it more than made up for it with its affordability, cleanliness, and convenient location. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a budget-friendly option for a short stay in Cordoba.

Classic Spain
Location: Cordoba, Southern Spain
Getting there: A fast train from Madrid for a few hours or a fast train from Malaga for one hour.
One building alone is reason enough to visit Cordoba: the mesmerising multiarched Mezquita. One of the world's greatest Islamic buildings, the Mezquita is a symbol of the worldly, sophisticated culture that flourished here more than a millennium ago when Córdoba was capital of Islamic Spain and western Europe's biggest, most cultured city.
Cordoba has stunning classical architecture and is definitely worth a day trip from one of the bigger Spanish cities in central or southern Spain.

Great Mosque of Cordoba Interior
The Great Mosque is located at Calle Cardenal Herrero, 1, 14003 Cordoba.
The Mosque Cathedral covers an area of 180m X 130m after all its historical expansions. The prayer hall is made up of a forest of columns with a harmonious colour scheme of red and white arches, there are approximately 1250 columns of varying heights and different stone materials.
The prayer hall also had richly-decorated mihrab surrounded by an architecturally-defined maqsura.
The Great Mosque was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, it has been a site of religious worship since the mid-century and still holds the religious significance, attracting visitors from all around the world.

Nice Old Bridge
It is located at Av. del Alcazar, s/n 14003 Cordoba, 2 to 3 minutes walk from the Great Mosque.
It was built in the early 1st century BC across the Guadalquivir river, though it has been reconstructed at various times since. It is also known locally as the old bridge for two thousand years, until the construction of San Rafael in the mid-twentieth century, it was the city's only bridge across the river.
The Calahorra tower is a fortified gate standing on the left bank of the river to protect the Roman Bridge. It consisted of an arched gate between two. A third tower was added to the existing one, in the shape of two cylinders connecting them.
In May 2004, the bridge was pedestrianised after the construction of Miraflores Bridge. As part of the historic site, it was declared as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. Walking along the bridge, admiring the breathtaking surroundings, is a relaxing thing.

Jewish Quarters
The Jewish Quarters of Cordoba is the area of the Spanish city in which the Jews lived between the 10th and 15th century. The current Jewish Quarters stretches from the Puerta de Almodovar to the Mosque-Cathedral and the episcopal palace.
The Jewish Quarter retains the traditional urban layout of a medieval Islamic city, with two central intersecting streets which often end in dead ends or narrow streets.
The Jewish Quarter was separated from the rest of the city by a walled enclosure which both isolated its inhabitants and protected them from the attack of the Christians.
The City of Cordoba has a well preserved Jewish Quarter, located in the historic centre, is part of the area named an UNSECO World Heritage Site in 1994.

Stunning Mosque Cathedral of Cordoba
This is a truly stunning building and to me, definitely worth a visit if you are in or near Cordoba. Known as the Mezquita-Catedral, this huge building is a grand structure and rich in history and complex, varied architecture styles, and one of the oldest structures still standing from the time Muslims ruled this region.
Feel small and a sense of wonder as you walk through the halls with many awe inspiring columns or through the large gothic style cathedral side of this place. It’s definitely unique, and also great for a picture or two (or more) as souvenirs of your trip. Note that flash and tripods are not allowed though (we just leaned my phone on a bench for this shot!).
I think entry cost us around 11 euros.

Heat in Singapore remind me of my Spain trip during summer. It hit 35 degree celcius where ice drinks are easily melt. I think I may put an egg on my head and it will be cooked (that describe how hot it was!).
However, even though it's extremely hot, the view here make me happy. Oh well, before travelling we should have prepared for the worse including heatwave!
Just remember to put on UV sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses! Prepare spare money to purchase float, ice drink, blended ice, or some cold drink to hydrate yourself.

Attractions to visit in Alcazar of the Christian Monarchs
The mosque cathedral of Cordoba is a unique building which has been a place of worship for the world’s two major faiths.
Built over 1200 years ago in a moorish style during the Islamic emirate that once covered southern Spain, it was converted to Christianity around 500 years later following the reconquista.
Today the building is testament to the Islamic architecture that was highly influential within Andalusia as well as an important place of worship for the city’s Catholics.

Coffee and lunch in Cordoba 🗺️
#travellerswonderland
During my trip to Córdoba, I stumbled upon this quaint café right in the heart of the old town, and it was the perfect spot for a coffee and lunch break ☕🍴. Nestled among the charming streets near the Mezquita, the atmosphere was so relaxing with its lovely patio and Andalusian decor. The café offered a delicious selection of local tapas for lunch, with my favorite being salmorejo and jamón ibérico. Paired with a perfectly brewed coffee, it was the perfect way to refuel during my sightseeing adventure.
The price was really affordable, with lunch coming in around €15, which felt like great value for the quality of the food. Afterward, it was just a short walk to the Mezquita-Catedral, one of the must-see attractions in Córdoba, and the Roman Bridge, offering beautiful views of the city. I spent the rest of my afternoon strolling through the flower-filled patios and taking in the rich history of the place.
If you’re visiting Córdoba, make sure to take a break and enjoy some local food and coffee—it’s the perfect way to experience the city’s vibe.

Cordoba’s Iconic Landmark!
The Mezquita-Catedral in Córdoba is definitely worth visiting. It is a unique and awe-inspiring structure with a rich history that reflects the diverse cultural influences of Spain. The mosque's forest of columns and horseshoe arches is visually stunning, and the intricate details of the mihrab are remarkable. The later addition of the Christian cathedral within the mosque creates an extraordinary juxtaposition of architectural styles. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it offers deep insights into the region's historical and religious evolution.

The city of Córdoba, immersed in the river of historical dreams
Córdoba, another cultural heritage city, is located in Andalucía. The old town boasts many unforgettable architectural sites. The historic center of Córdoba retains the medieval layout and the peculiar narrow streets, squares, avenues, beautiful fountains, and exquisite gardens that are cleverly integrated into the urban landscape. The city is built along the winding riverbanks.
The Great Mosque-Cathedral⛪️Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba is the iconic building of Córdoba, divided into two main parts: the courtyard and the mosque. It was originally built in 785 AD, and the reconstruction and expansion projects continued for several centuries. After the Christian kingdom recaptured Córdoba, a Gothic church was built inside the Great Mosque, but the Islamic architectural style was largely preserved.
We were also fortunate to experience the Alma de Córdoba show at night, which used light and shadow to highlight the weight of history! Following the light path, we delved into the different historical and artistic styles of the Great Mosque! It was very worthwhile!
The beautiful view of the tower from the flower-laden narrow streets is a popular photo spot here. Many residential courtyards have won awards during the Courtyard Festival. We happened to visit during the festival, and every household opened their doors for people to admire and evaluate, decorating their balconies, outer walls, and courtyards with great effort. Such beautiful alleys with blooming flowers can be seen everywhere.
The Viana Palace Palacio de Viana is also a very representative award-winning courtyard, showcasing many historical items, and several different styles of courtyard landscapes that are also stunning!
The Roman Bridge Puerta Del Puente is a great place to view the cityscape from afar and is also a very romantic place for a stroll.
We also found two great restaurants here 🍴Restaurant Bandolero and Restaurant Hermita La Candelaria, both of which have very distinctive dining environments.
At Restaurant Tablao El Jaleo, besides the delicious food, I also enjoyed my first Flamenco show in a cool setting. You can't truly understand the performers' expressions on stage without experiencing it firsthand, and it brought tears to my eyes! The audience's enthusiasm was equally high! The atmosphere was fantastic!
