A journey through time in the medieval town of Conques.
Conques is located in the heart of the Lot Valley in Aveyron, southern France. Surrounded by mountains, it is a hidden gem. Although it is secluded, the village has a long history. Despite the vicissitudes of time, it still retains its original, simple, and elegant appearance. Many medieval buildings are scattered on the hillside, and the original cobblestone roads and ancient churches bear witness to the town's history.
Although Conques is a small village, it is an important town in French cultural history and an important stop on the pilgrimage route. The Église abbatiale Sainte-Foy in Conques was built in 1120, and the two spires on the west side were added in the 19th century. The abbey is a representative of the Roman style. The most famous is the lintel at the top of the entrance on the west facade, which is carved with the scene of the Last Judgment.
Whether for believers or ordinary tourists, Conques is a place worth savoring. In addition to the historically significant Sainte-Foy Abbey, Conques also retains many ancient architectural relics, many of which have a history of hundreds of years, some of which can be traced back to the 15th century. The stone houses carved out of the terrain, the Roman fountains, the scattered city gates and towers, and the Pilgrim's Bridge are all must-see sights.
A church in a mountainside village that was a feast for the eyes and ears 🇫🇷
In the center of the town, there is a cathedral built in the 11th century in the Romanesque style of southern France. It is known as a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages because it contains the relics of a saint, and it is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many people have been visiting since early in the morning.
The monk explained about the 124 statues for about 30 minutes.
Above the entrance to the Sainte-Foy Cathedral, you can see a tympanum (a semicircular decoration on a door or window, an architectural style often used in ancient Greece and the Middle Ages) with elaborate carvings of the Last Judgement, angels, and devils.
After mass in the magnificent cathedral, we sang in unison, and the voices and organ sounds resonated for a long time. If you want to go up to the second floor and listen to the organ performance up close, it costs €6.
The organ performance was not over yet, but I followed the people to the front of the cathedral, and the laser show began, shooting light at the statues I had seen earlier in time to the organ music.
The 124 sculptures of the tympanum began to seep into the light one by one, and finally, one work of art was completed. Every night for about 4 months every year, a laser show that is enchanting to the eyes and ears unfolds.
