2025 Cape Raoul Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in January)
Famous surf spot
Shipstern bluff is a world famous surf spot. There were many international surf competitions held there. I was hoping to spot some pro surfers during my hike but unfortunately there was none. I was told that it was low tide then, which made it unsuitable for surfing. Still, the waves were huge and came crashing onto the rocks during my time there. The views were majestic!
There are a few hiking trails there and they all start near the car park. The hike took about 3.5 hours, with some elevation and steps. Saw some furry friends and a beautiful rainbow along the way.

Cape Raoul - Tasmania's Tasman Peninsula
#australiatrip
Cape Raoul on Tasmania's Tasman Peninsula offers one of the most dramatic day hikes with its towering dolerite cliffs and panoramic ocean views. The journey begins at the end of Stormlea Road, leading hikers through a mix of forest and heath to the awe-inspiring cliff edges where the sea crashes against the rocks below. The well-maintained track, part of Tasmania's Great Short Walks, is a moderate 14km return, providing a scenic and invigorating experience.
The highlight of Cape Raoul is undoubtedly the dramatic drop into the ocean where you can witness the geological marvel of dolerite columns jutting out of the landscape. The walk is not only a feast for the eyes with its breathtaking vistas of Raoul Bay and the chance to spot seals but also offers a serene escape into nature. With its challenging yet rewarding path, Cape Raoul is a must-visit for anyone seeking the wild beauty of Tasmania's coastline.
The Cape Raoul Viewing Point
#australiatrip Fantastic views and a great walk. Takes about 5 hours return from car park. We did it just under with a few photo stops and a longer break for lunch while we enjoyed the view. It takes 1 hour to get to the first lookout that overlooks Cape Raoul. Then another 1.5 hours to get to the lookout on the tip of the cape. The whole track is well maintained and the second part has multiple switchbacks for the long downward climb to the cape plus 264 block steps. The view was beyond spectacular though! Worth every step up to the top!t
The Shipstern Bluff
#australiatrip What a magnificent place. So make sure you go early and, go there first while you got more juice in you. If you plan on going to the other lookout at Cape Raoul. Takes about 2 hours return with a brisk pace and time for exploring. The big waves are very hard to catch, but the view was well worth the walk. Nothing like having lunch looking out to the ocean at the giant rock cliff. Lots of parking available, no bathrooms.
