All Moments About Canet De Mar
Mediterranean's True Hidden Gem
A Journey Along Spain's Mediterranean Coast ~ Barcelona (Region)
Canet de Mar is truly a hidden gem on the Mediterranean, nestled almost at the heart of a charming small town just 50 minutes away from Barcelona. It feels like stepping into another world, with few tourists but an abundance of modernist architecture, including works by the renowned Catalan architect Lluis Domenach Montaner. The town boasts a spacious and pristine golden beach, and the locals are incredibly friendly.
A surprising visit to a beautifully converted house museum.
Mediterranean Coast Tour of Spain ~ Barcelona (Region)
You can see two connected houses: one is a farmhouse filled with various exhibits like printing presses, ceramics, and personal items. The other house features an oil painting exhibition about the sea and a photography exhibition that I personally loved, along with many other fascinating displays. If you're in Canet, you must visit! The entrance fee is €5 with discounts available, and it's free on the first Sunday of every month.
Modernist Style Art Church
A Mediterranean Coast Journey in Spain ~ Barcelona (Region)
The Sanctuary of Mercy in Canet de Mar is a remarkable architectural and spiritual treasure worth visiting. Surrounded by nature, this sanctuary offers breathtaking views of the sea and mountains, creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere that is hard to find elsewhere.
Its modernist style and meticulously crafted details reflect the unique artistic influences of the region. The interior, filled with light and color, immediately conveys a sense of tranquility and devotion.
Beyond its visual beauty, the sanctuary holds significant historical and cultural importance for the residents of Canet de Mar. It serves as a gathering place for pilgrims and visitors seeking moments of meditation or simply enjoying the peaceful environment.
Undoubtedly, this is a must-visit destination for those looking to delve deeper into Catalan architecture, local spirituality, or simply experience a place full of charm and serenity.
Local Catalan cuisine & heritage architecture
Restaurant El Santuari is located in a modernist building that was designed by Catalan master architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. The restaurant serves typical Catalan cuisine in an environment surrounded by nature at the upper part of Canet de Mar.
Some of the highlights dishes are: “caracoles” the very typical if yet unusual snails, “butifarra” a typical pork sausage, mussels (fresh from the nearby port of Canet) and steaks that are grilled with firewood 🪵
You can see that the recipes follow the tradition and some dishes have been in the menu for generations, as shown in picture 3 where an old menu displays the dishes priced in pesetas, the currency in Spain before Euros € started.
The restaurant is a short waking distance from both the downtown of Canet de Mar and the Castell de Santa Florentina - the monument to visit when in Canet - so it is a great choice for a meal while visiting the area.
