This mysterious and charming country, with its medieval romance and unique Eastern European flair, captivated me from the moment I arrived, despite all the research I had done beforehand. In Bucharest, I visited the magnificent Palace of the Parliament, a truly iconic building with a lavish interior that speaks volumes about Romania's glorious past. Next, I traveled to Sibiu, where the well-preserved old town, with its narrow cobblestone streets and ancient buildings, transported me back to the Middle Ages. Brasov and Sighisoara, on the other hand, charmed visitors with their unique castles, especially Sighisoara's defensive towers, which felt straight out of a fairy tale. I was pleasantly surprised by Romanian cuisine. Ciorba de Burta (tripe soup) had a unique, sour, and salty flavor that was incredibly appetizing. Sarmale si Mamaliga (cabbage rolls and polenta) was a truly authentic traditional dish, each bite filled with a rich, home-style flavor. And the fragrant Mici (grilled minced meat rolls) were an absolute paradise for meat lovers. Overall, my trip to Romania exceeded all expectations. Here are my favourite things to do in Bucharest: • visit to Ceaușescu's grand ‘Palace of the Parliament’ (entry: £10, bring your passport), the second-largest building in the world (after the pentagon), is a must. This imposing marble behemoth was made solely from Romanian materials, and took the country to the brink of bankruptcy. Now home to Romania’s parliament, tours here discuss Ceaușescu's vision, and the building’s purpose. • Revolution Square, home to the 1989 revolution which ended Ceaușescu's regime, is another important site you must visit. • Lipscani (or the old town) has a heap of shops, bars, restaurants and clubs to waste many an hour. But for me the simple pleasure of wandering the old squares, streets and alleyways on foot was the reason we loved this part of Bucharest so much. Unfortunately, much of Bucharest’s architectural grandeur was destroyed by wars, earthquakes and Ceaușescu's march toward systemisation. • Chill in Bucharest’s many parks which come alive on warm days as locals flock to walk the vast pathways, relax in the sun, row the many lakes, or enjoy an ice cream or two. And the cherry on the cake: • Therme Bucharest is Romania’s number one most popular tourist attraction. Over 1 million visitors (30 percent from abroad) visit the wellness center each year. #citystroll Bucharest is such an underrated gem! My trip there was full of surprises. The city has this fascinating blend of old-world charm and modern energy. My first stop was the Palace of the Parliament, which is the second largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon! The entrance fee was around 40 RON (about €8), and the sheer scale of it is jaw-dropping. I also wandered through the Old Town, which is packed with vibrant bars, restaurants, and stunning historical buildings like Stavropoleos Monastery. The architecture is a beautiful mix of neo-classical and communist-era buildings, making the cityscape incredibly unique. 🏛️ If you’re into parks, don’t miss Herăstrău Park—a huge green space where you can even rent a boat to paddle on the lake. Transfagarasan 💚 After driving up a zig zag road you’ll have the most amazing view over green hills and crystal clear lakes ⛰️ 5.Peles Castle ❤️Another very unique castle with a beautiful park 🌳 6.Bran Castle 🧛‍♂️ This is the home of Count Dracula 🩸 🏰 7-9. Sibiu ❤️ This city could be located in Germany and it‘s so much fun to walk around the cute streets. 🚗 How to get around The easiest way is to take a car because many places can‘t be accessed by public transport. ⏰ Best time to visit From spring to autumn is probably the most convenient time! We were in Romania in summer and the weather was perfect ☀️ 🏨 Where to stay Hotels are very affordable but you need to search a bit to find dog friendly ones (just activate the „pets allowed“ filter on your preferred booking website / app) 🛏️ 🐶 Is Romania dog friendly? It depends. We had no issues to bring Felix to the sights but restaurants don‘t allow dogs so better be prepared for that. Whenever we visit countries where street animals are, we often get messages like „Aren‘t you afraid they will attack Felix?“ but you don‘t need to be scared! Felix made many street doggy friends over the years and they are usually very submissive and just curious. Sharing a meal with them helps a lot 🍖 Make sure your dog‘s vaccinations are updated to protect him from diseases these animals might have and bring something against fleas.
