For hiking enthusiasts, Sydney is a destination to be! The amazing blue mountains national park is a World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains National Park, home of the famous Three Sisters in Katoomba where there are 6 areas in this park to discover. The katoomba area is a popular tourists attraction where the iconic 3 sisters are and is a very short walk from the parking area to the site called echo point look out. Apart from echo point, there are also other short walks like towards the Wentworth falls, head towards the went worth falls track and be greater by a scenic view with a cascading waterfall, there are also several pinic spots for you to have a rest and to absorb the magnificent view around you. #summervacay Transport: It takes over 2 hours from Central by BMT, so I chose to join a one-day tour instead for convenience! 🚌 Must-visit spots: Lincoln’s Rock 🪨 Blue Mountains & the Scenic World Cableways 🚡 🔥 Red Cableway – Highly Recommended! Out of the three cable cars, this one is by far the most fun! With a steep incline of 52°, it’s actually built on the old coal railway tracks. The ride is short (about 3 mins), but totally worth it! 🎢 💛 Yellow Cableway – Great Views! Features a glass-bottom floor, so you can look straight down into the valley! You’ll also get amazing views of Katoomba Falls from the left side. 🌊🌄 Suggested route: Red or Blue Cableway ⬇️ down to the valley → walk through (coal mine entrance, ventilation shaft, miner’s hut) 🚶♀️⛏️ → Red or Blue Cableway ⬆️ up → take Yellow Cableway across → see Katoomba Falls 💦 ‼️ Note: No toilets down in the valley. Here’s how my rejuvenating Blue Mountains weekend getaway unfolded! 📍 Destination: Blue Mountains (Katoomba & Leura) Distance from Sydney CBD: ~90 km (1.5-hour drive or 2-hour train) 🚆 Getting There I took the NSW TrainLink from Central Station to Katoomba—super easy, affordable (~$9 one way), and scenic! No stress about parking, and the station is right in town. 🌿 Day 1: Waterfalls, Lookouts & Cozy Vibes ☕ Morning: Coffee & Breakfast in Leura Started the day at The Bunker (a rustic-chic café with amazing sourdough pancakes). Explored Leura Mall—filled with boutique shops, bookstores, and old-world charm. 🏞️ Midday: Exploring the Three Sisters & Echo Point Walked from Katoomba to Echo Point Lookout (10 mins) for that iconic Three Sisters view. Took the Giant Stairway down (only if you’re brave—it’s steep!) and hiked along the Federal Pass Trail to Katoomba Falls. 🌊 Afternoon: Scenic World & Hidden Waterfalls Rode the Scenic Railway (world’s steepest passenger railway!) and walked the Scenic Walkway through Jurassic-like rainforest. Detoured to Wentworth Falls (30-min drive)—a stunning multi-tiered waterfall with epic valley views. 🍷 Evening: Fireside Dining in Katoomba Cozy dinner at The Wintergarden (modern Australian cuisine with local wines). Stayed at The Hydro Majestic Hotel—a historic Art Deco gem with sweeping mountain views. 🌄 Day 2: Sunrise, Secret Trails & Local Gems 🌅 Sunrise at Cahill’s Lookout Woke up early for a magical sunrise over the Jamison Valley (fewer crowds than Echo Point!). 🥾 Morning: Hiking the Grand Canyon Track A moderate 6.3km loop through rainforest, sandstone cliffs, and creeks. Highlights: Fern-filled canyons, trickling waterfalls, and ancient rock formations. 🍳 Brunch in Blackheath Stopped at Anonymous Café for their famous mushroom ragu toastie. Explored Blackheath’s antique shops and the stunning Govetts Leap Lookout. 🚂 Afternoon: Slow Travel Back to Sydney Took the train back, stopping at Glenbrook for a quick dip in the Jellybean Pool (a hidden freshwater swimming hole). 💡 Why the Blue Mountains Was the Perfect Escape ✅ Wilderness therapy—fresh air, waterfalls, and endless hiking trails. ✅ No car needed—easy train access and walkable towns. ✅ Cosy winter or crisp autumn vibes (think fireplaces, misty valleys, and hot chocolate). The walk into the deepest parts of the park with the best views of the waterfalls can be challenging both going up and down. This is a must see you can stand where Queen Elizabeth once stood to view the three sisters, which is a rock formation. Or you can take the time to hike all the way down into the canopy of the forest where it is nice and cool as you cross the waterfalls that start with a trickle, and end up being majestic, you will be rewarded for all your efforts. The entire way is paved with asphalt, but does get a bit challenging as there are large block steps when you start going down into the forest that can be a bit tricky if you have knee or hip issues. This should not dissuade you just be careful and bring a walking stick .

The three sisters are awaiting for you. This was an amazing trip. The wildlife park was perfect as we got to see the animals and birds up close and even feed some of the wallabies from our hands. The stop in town on the way for lunch was nice with good recommendations. The scenic world was nice to see the falls and forest floor. The cable car ride was enjoyable. It gave you a chance to see different parts of the mountains.The day was great to end with the ferry back to Sydney. Tony was wonderful from sharing information about everything as we passed, to a few dad jokes to keep it fun. I highly recommend this trip.
