2024 Bazhou Travel Guide: Must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transportation routes (updated in December)
Bazhou is situated at the eastern end of the central Hebei plain between Beijing, Tianjin and Baoding. The city has a long history and is home to several historical attractions including Longquan Temple (literally 'dragon spring temple'), which is located in the town of Xin'an and was built in the late Tang dynasty. The temple is named after two wells in front of the main hall that provide a continuous supply of water. Other popular attractions include a traditional Chinese opera museum and a Qing dynasty residence.

Wang Family Courtyard| Shengfang Ancient Town
The house was originally divided into four small courtyards, integrating European, African, traditional Chinese Qing-style and other architectural styles.
👐At present, there are only two small courtyards in the northwest and northeast. All other buildings were destroyed by the 1976 earthquake.
There are two existing small courtyards. One is a Qing Dynasty courtyard and the other is a European-style courtyard. They combine Chinese and Western styles to complement each other. The overall color design of the courtyard is harmonious and unified, and the exquisite brick carving art represents the fashion of the time.
👐It is said that the Wang Family Courtyard cost 30,000 taels of silver. You can do some calculations, how many RMB are these 30,000 taels of silver equivalent to today?!
👐From 1945 to 1947, the Wang Family Courtyard was the office space of the Shengfang Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China and the headquarters of Shengfang’s two defense battles. During the Battle of Pingjin, Nie Rongzhen, Yang Chengwu and Liu Bingyan commanded the battle here.
After liberation, national leaders such as Deng **, Nie **, and Yang ** were received here, and some foreign delegations also visited here.

Hot Spring in Hebei
Weekend trip to Bazhou for hot springs. We drove about 1.5 hours from Sanlitun in Beijing to get to a Hot Spring hotel called Mingtang Hot spring Resort. They have indooor and outdoor hotspringa as well as swimming pools, two infinity pools outside and a large pool inside. Our room also had private pools. When we arrived we got free coupons for afternoon tea in the coffee bar. In the evening we found a hotpot restaurant downtown in Bazhou and a KTV. Super fun to get out of Beijing for a little roadtrip.

🏠The main gate was open when I arrived at noon. It is a small square courtyard with some company offices. I couldn't even find the exhibition hall indicated by the arrow, only the sand table of Bazhou Ancient City in the courtyard. There are ancient-style buildings on one side of the square, but the shops on the ground floor have long been empty.

🏘️The temple is well-organized, and the architectural style fully reflects the magnificence and solemnity of the temple, with a touch of luxury and nature.
🌿The most distinctive feature is the "Guanyin Pavilion", which is guarded by the Four Heavenly Kings around the base, and the "Yama Hall" at the base of the Sutra Pavilion, which I have never seen before.

Da Bei Chan Temple
Da Bei Chan Temple in Shengfang Ancient Town
Da Bei Chan Temple is located in the north of Shengfang Ancient Town, also known as "North Temple". It was built in the late Yuan Dynasty and is a large and spectacular Buddhist architectural complex. The predecessor of Da Bei Temple has a history of more than 500 years. The temple was rebuilt and funded by local believers. Da Bei Temple covers an area of more than 100 acres. It is a rectangular courtyard with a north-south layout. The related buildings are stone archways, main gates, and giant Guanyin Bodhisattva. The Han Baiyu sculpture introduces the Buddha Hall, the Three World Buddha Hall, etc. along the central axis. The entire temple is well-built, with exquisite carvings and magnificent momentum. It is a rare Buddhist art building. Whenever a major Buddhist event is held, the chanting of the Buddha's name and the incense curling up is a place for the Shengfang to pity the people and rest in peace.
Shengfang Ancient Town! Don't come here~
Shengfang Ancient Town, with its long history and rich culture, has many well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty buildings, such as Shengfang Ancient City Wall and Wenchang Pavilion, showcasing a unique style and antique charm.
Since 2018, we have almost come here every year to check in. We love the atmosphere of the ancient town, and most importantly, it has everything for eating, drinking, and playing, making it a great place for nearby kids to visit during the New Year. The historical temple fairs are extraordinary, where you can see many intangible cultural heritage performances.
Main attractions: Xilou, Wenchang Pavilion, Wang Family Courtyard, Zhang Family Courtyard, Shengfang Museum, etc., all free to visit.
Famous snacks: Beiqiao Fried Cake, Donkey Rolling, Crispy Lu, Sincere Lotus Root Soup Dumplings, Xue's Pastries, Lu's Preserved Eggs, Beishao Distillery Wine, etc. The prices are affordable and down-to-earth, with tastes varying from person to person.
On the main central street, there are many stalls selling small firecrackers, lanterns, and toys. Children will have a great time here 🥰!
Shengfang Ancient Town
Langfang Shengfang, an ancient town founded at the end of the Spring and Autumn period 2400 years ago, was originally a water town. It was officially named Shengfang during the Song dynasty, meaning 'fragrant victory over water, eternally renowned'. It was listed as one of the six major towns in Zhili during the Qing dynasty. Today, Shengfang still retains some cultural relics and architecture: Wen Chang Pavilion, the Wang Family Courtyard with its classic European architecture, and the ruins of the Zhang Family Courtyard. The open Shengfang Museum and other sites along the town's main street recreate the bustling scenes of the ancient town of Shengfang. Sculptures and restorations also allow you to appreciate the diverse trading culture of Shengfang~
The China Bicycle Museum offered me an alternative travel experience
I woke up on a whim in the morning and decided to visit the China Bicycle Museum in Bazhou. After all, I had been thinking about it for a while, and I've always had a soft spot for museums.
After driving for nearly two hours, I spent three hours at the museum, where I saw the treasure of the museum, the 'Platinum Man' produced in England in 1910, as well as the bicycle ridden around the Forbidden City by Puyi, the last emperor of China. There were also military bicycles from Germany and Japan that could tow small cannons, and the oldest Chinese bicycle brands, Forever and Flying Pigeon.
I must say, the museum is an alternative feeling I associate with traveling, and a source of fun in life.
I suddenly feel that, whether it's a holiday or not, visiting a niche museum is a great way to 'escape the crowd' in life or travel.
PS: At most, there were no more than twenty people in the museum for the better half of the day, and more often it felt like a private showing just for me 😄, which was simply awesome.
📇 China Bicycle Museum (also known as Huaxia Folk Collection Museum)
📍 No. 193, Yingbin East Road, Bazhou City, Hebei Province
🚗 It is recommended to drive there, and you can search for 'Huaxia Folk Collection Museum' in your navigation system)
💰 Free, but you need to bring your ID card
⏰ It takes 2-3 hours to tour the museum
🗺️ The museum is divided into four floors; the bicycle exhibition is on the fourth floor; the third floor is the Celebrity Hall; the second floor is the Folklore Hall; the first floor is the Bazhou Museum.
Shengfang Ancient Town! Don't come! Discouraged
Shengfang is located to the east of Bazhou City, Hebei Province, and is a town with a long history and profound cultural heritage. There are many well-preserved Ming and Qing buildings, such as the Shengfang Ancient City Wall, Wenchang Pavilion, etc. These buildings have a unique style and are full of an ancient charm!
I really like the atmosphere of the ancient town, and the key point is that it has everything for eating, drinking, and playing, making it very suitable for the nearby 'treasures' to visit during the New Year! (Especially from the eleventh to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, during the temple fair, it is extraordinarily lively, and you can see many intangible cultural heritage performances: stilt walking, lion dancing, etc.)
.
🩷Main attractions: the opera tower, Wenchang Pavilion, Wang's Courtyard, Zhang's Courtyard, Shengfang Museum, etc. All are free to visit.
.
🩷Time-honored snacks: Beiqiao fried cakes, donkey rolls, crispy Lv, Chengxin lotus root powder dumplings, Xue's pastries, Lu's preserved eggs, Beishao pot wine, etc. These snacks are affordably priced, quite down-to-earth, and the taste varies from person to person. (Specific food introductions will be detailed in the next note)
.
🩷Central Main Street
There are many stalls selling small firecrackers, lanterns, toys, and the kids will have a great time🥰!
✅100 yuan bought a big bag of small firecrackers for the baby, enough for him to set off a few times.
✅The lanterns are local specialty handicrafts, including Pig Bajie lanterns, duck lanterns, sedan chair lanterns, etc.
✅Toys of various kinds, reasonably priced, including intangible cultural heritage toys, made of glass, blown by mouth, I forgot the name, and there are also small ducks and chicks for sale, which children like very much.
.
‼️The main streets and alleys are quite narrow, and it can be easy to get stuck when cars meet.
✔️It is recommended to park at
the small square on the west side of Wenchang Pavilion, free
on both sides of the road after crossing the bridge on the south side of the ancient town, free
.
🩷I come here every year not because it is luxurious, but because I like to experience the local atmosphere and the festive mood of the New Year
Cao Wei Ancient City - A Journey through the Culture of the Three Kingdoms
Departed on the fourth day of the Chinese New Year, avoiding congestion all the way, heading to Xuchang. Arrived in Daming on the evening of the fourth day, which is also part of Handan. It was my first visit to Daming, a stroll around the ancient city of Daming from the Ming and Qing dynasties, where the city gates are well-preserved. By the time I reached the Daming County Catholic Church, it was completely dark, and I captured the church under the stars and moon .
On the fifth day (14th), I passed by the ancient city of Shangqiu, but was scared off by the crowd and did not stop, hurriedly continuing on. Arrived at the Xuchang Guesthouse in the evening, finally got to taste the authentic spicy soup, delicious and not too spicy
On the sixth day (15th), visited the Xuchang Museum, and in the afternoon, the Cao Wei Ancient City, which was super crowded. Didn't enter the Prime Minister's Mansion, walked for a long time and couldn't find a taxi. There really are a lot of people in Henan. Suddenly, we found ourselves at the famous Pangdonglai, sat down at the entrance to rest for a while, watching the bustling crowd, didn't have the courage to go in . Walked a long distance again, finally found a taxi . At the same small restaurant, had the spicy soup again, and also had the food that is clearly a pancake but insists on being called 'mo', the old 'mo' and vegetable 'mo'
On the seventh day (16th), set off for Bozhou, Anhui, to see where Cao Cao worked, and then to his birthplace. Visited Bozhou Guesthouse, Bozhou Museum, Cao Cao Memorial Hall. Cao Cao's greatness needs no description, everyone understands . An outstanding politician, military strategist, literary figure, calligrapher . Cao family tomb cluster - Cao Si Gu Dui, and the beautiful and fragrant wintersweet
On the eighth day (17th), prepared to head back, avoiding congestion in various ways, Hua County - Daokou Ancient Town, under construction; Xun County Ancient City, road closure - caught up with the famous Xun County folk Shehuo . Then it was Hebi, Hebi Guesthouse, Hebi City Museum
On the ninth day (18th), continued to travel through villages and counties, Xian County, Hejian, tried Hejian donkey meat Huoshao for the first time, the Huoshao was large and crispy, like a pocket filled with donkey meat, the taste was superb . Only then did I realize what those in Beijing were, nothing at all . Arrived at Bazhou Mingtang Riyue Lake Hot Spring Resort in the evening, the hot springs were great . Returned to Beijing the next afternoon, ending the journey.
Langfang's Big Buddha Zen Temple, a place for burning incense and worshiping Buddha
The Big Buddha Zen Temple is located in the north of Shengfang Ancient Town, formerly known as Beidasi, which was built in the late Yuan Dynasty, rebuilt in the first year of Ming Tianshun, and renovated in the fifth year of Zhengde. It has a history of over 600 years. It reached its peak in the Qing Dynasty, but was destroyed due to natural disasters and wars.
The Big Buddha Temple was newly renovated in 2008, with a planned area of 80,000 square meters, including a building area of 28,000 square meters, and 23 large and small temple buildings. These buildings are well-arranged, majestic, with green bricks and tiles, or carved beams and painted pillars, and the golden and brilliant halls are dazzling.
Putting a small holiday for yourself, there are really many areas around Beijing that can be visited. This time, there is no clear destination on the accelerator, and it is easy to go south and come to Hebei Province. The most famous here is the various hot spring baths. This comfortable and comfortable project is the best for me. The first stop to reach Bazhou, the large and small indoor and outdoor and private soup Tangquan, it is so comfortable. !
