Inner Baduy, Banten
Baduy at a glance
Urang Kanekes or Baduy people are an ethnic group of the indigenous people of the Banten tribe in the Lebak Regency, Banten. Their population is about 26,000 people, and they are one of the tribes that isolate themselves from the outside world. In addition, they also have taboo beliefs to be documented, especially residents of the Inner Baduy area. (wikipedia)
Inner Baduy consists of three villages, namely Cibeo Village, Cikesik Village and Cikertawana Village, each of which is led by Puun. The term "Baduy" is a term given by outsiders to these community groups, starting with the term Dutch researchers who seem to equate them with the Arab Badawi group, which is a nomadic society. Another possibility is the existence of the Baduy River and Mount Baduy in the northern part of the area. They themselves prefer to refer to themselves as urang Kanekes or "people Kanekes" according to the name of their region, or a designation that refers to the name of their village such as Urang Cibeo (Garna, 1993).
The Baduy tribe itself consists of 2 groups, namely the inner Baduy tribe and the outer Baduy tribe.
Inner Baduy Tribe
This inner Baduy or Tangtu group is a group that lives in the forest and is also the most obedient to the rules that have been set by their customary head.
The hallmark of the Baduy tribe in this is their clothes that are not buttoned and collared, do not wear footwear, and their clothes are white or dark blue.
The Baduy tribe in this also does not know technology, money and schools so they can only communicate in their native language, namely Sundanese and read letters or Hancara script.
OUTSIDE BADUY
Different from the inner Baduy tribe, the outer Baduy tribe lives in an area that surrounds the area where the inner Baduy lives. The outside Baduy are also familiar with foreign cultures such as schools and money.
Because they know money, friends can see some outside Baduy people going to sell forest honey. The clothes worn by the Outer Baduy are also different from the Inner Baduy, which are white. (Bobo)
The Baduy tribe is generally divided into 3 villages, namely: Cibeo, Cikeusik, and Cikertawarna. The Baduy tribe always obeys all the customs and regulations that have been set by Pu'un or the head of the Baduy Tribe. Adherence to this custom is a rule that must be obeyed to live together. In addition, driven by strong beliefs, almost the entire Baduy community has never opposed or rejected the rules applied by the Pu'un (Chief of the Tribe).
The Baduy tribe lives right at the foot of the Kendeng mountains in Kanekes Village, Leuwidamar District, Lebak Regency. Their settlement is about 40 km from Rangkasbitung, the city center in Lebak, Banten. Baduy people speak Sundanese and Indonesia.
