Bagamoyo: where the past and future dances
📍: Bagamoyo
Venturing into Tanzania, let's explore Bagamoyo, a town whose name translates to "Lay down your heart" in Kiswahili…
Learning about its role as the final stop for slaves before their journey to Zanzibar and beyond during the East African slave trade evoked strong emotions in me. Did I not cry like a baby while walking through to town?! Omg
Established in the 8th century by people of Persian descent, Bagamoyo evolved into a bustling port and trading port - welcoming diverse communities including Arabs, Indians and Chinese before being colonised by Germany in the 18th century.
The Kaole Ruins house a small museum displaying artefacts of Chinese origin - shedding light on ancient commercial ties. The site also features a magic well and several tombs.

Walking in Bagamoyo, Tanzania, the cultural capital of the ancient capital
Bagamoyo is the famous historic city and important port of Tanzania, close to the Rufu estuary and close to the Zanzibar Strait.
Cultural heritage
Compared to the economic capital of Dar es Salaam, Bagamoyo is more inclined to the cultural capital of Tanzania. It is recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage and the Tanzanian government is aware of the important cultural values here. It is striving to preserve the cultural heritage of the colonial era of Bagamoyo and try to revive this ancient city.
City History
Bagamoyo was originally a small village dominated by fishing and hunting. The 18th century relied on its superior geographical location and the dark but prosperous black slave trade of the capitalist countries at the time. The population has increased dramatically and trade has become more frequent. It has become the colonial center of Germany's East Africa.
It was also the arrival of the Germans that led to the decline. The Germans ended the trade of slaves, which meant the termination of business in Bagamo. By the beginning of the 20th century, due to the railway construction of the German Empire in the interior, the importance of the Bagamoyo Trade Center was reduced at a geometric rate.
Walking in the city of Bagamoyo, you can feel the simplicity and original ecology here, and the ruins everywhere tell the history of the evil black slave trade.
Bagamo about "in your Swahili" means "to leave your heart", this heartbreaking name is also related to the history of slave trade. As the largest black slave trade market in East Africa in the 19th century, the black slaves will be distributed overseas by the slave owners after they arrive here, so for them, this is the last stop in their hometown. If you leave here, it means leaving your hometown. .
Walk to the Old Port, which was a port that transported slaves at the time. Now only when the tide is high can you see some port appearances. Usually there are only trees, witnessing the cruelty and sadness of a hundred years. .
Multiculturalism
In addition to the tragic black slave history, Bagamoyo is also the most diverse ethnic group in Tanzania. It is mainly Swahili culture, but also Arab. The descendants live here, while the religion is dominated by Hinduism and Muslims.
There are many church sites in the city of Bagamoyo, including the churches built by Chinese Muslims who came here on the Silk Road around the 13th century. The church also displays local Chinese porcelain bowls.
There is a well in the site. They regard the water in the well as holy water, and they will drink water from here to seek the blessing of the gods.
is such a cultural ancient city, quietly telling the long and sad history of Tanzania.
