~Nagabongsan~Sunset on the top of the snowy mountain~
#OctoberGoodDestinations2024
Changfeng Mountain is a magnificent snow-capped mountain with spectacular natural scenery and sightseeing mountain cable cars. It is not only a great viewpoint for hiking, but also a great place to watch the sunset!
You can easily reach the top of the mountain by taking the sightseeing mountain cable car and enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery and snow-white glaciers along the way. The design of the cable car makes people feel as if they are in the air, especially on a clear day, the view is extremely vast.
After reaching the top of the mountain, visitors can quietly wait for the sunset on the observation deck. As the sun slowly sinks into the mountain ridge, the golden light shines on the snow-capped peaks, forming a magnificent natural picture that is intoxicating.
Autumn foliage at Mount Tsubakuro and Kassen Ridge
This is the autumn foliage on Kassen Ridge, one of the three steepest climbs in the Northern Alps and the main climbing route for Mt. Tsubakuro. The leaves were beautifully colored, with vibrant golden and red colors. Thanks to this, the fatigue of the climb was blown away.

[Azumino] The largest wasabi field in Japan! Introducing Daio Wasabi Farm
Daio Wasabi Farm is located in Azumino City, where meltwater from the Northern Alps flows, and its wasabi fields, stretching for about 1 km, are the largest in Japan. Within the facility, you can enjoy gourmet food such as the famous real wasabi rice bowl and wasabi ice cream, and the waterwheel on the Tade River, which was used as a location for a movie directed by Akira Kurosawa, still remains to this day.
The best season to visit and stroll through the wasabi fields at Daio Wasabi Farm is from late September to late October, when the autumn leaves can be seen, and it is crowded with many people.

[Nagano Prefecture] Azumino Daio Wasabi Farm
You can visit the fields of real wasabi that producers are carefully cultivating in the clear stream without paying parking fees or admission fees 💓
Going through the gate, there is a large wasabi field! Under the black net sheet that blocks direct sunlight, a bed of wasabi that has taken root in the clear stream and grown little by little over time appears ❣️
Going around the garden seems like a good workout. 😁💦
In another stream where kappa might appear, a waterwheel splashes water, inviting visitors to a fairy tale world. 🖼
When you get tired of walking, take a short break. Enjoy some wasabi soft serve 🍦
A refreshing taste with a slight tang. We enjoyed the local soft serve that is unique to this place 😋

・Shinshu soba and real wasabi rice (1,480 yen)
・Soba Seiro (1,000 yen)
"Takeout corner"
・Daioh Premium (480 yen)

At the restaurant, you rub the real wasabi yourself☺️
Freshly rubbed wasabi doesn't make your mouth tingle even if you eat a lot‼️
It's not spicy and has a "refreshing aroma"🥰
I was surprised that the taste is completely different from commercially available wasabi tubes🤭
The wasabi ice cream also has more wasabi than I expected❤︎
There is a row of wasabi on the premises, and there is also a drinking fountain of the 100 famous waters! The ice-cold water was delicious 😌
The water is about 14℃ and there is a space where you can touch it, so it's perfect for a summer trip 😄
However, the water was so cold that I couldn't stay still 🤣
There is also a photogenic spot with a waterwheel, so if you go to Nagano, please go there!

The view of the Hotaka mountain range dyed in the sunset
If the weather is good, the scenery on top of the mountain is beautiful, something you rarely see on the ground. The snow-covered peaks of Hotaka are faintly illuminated by the setting sun, giving off a somewhat ephemeral atmosphere. From here, the temperature drops sharply, and the world becomes crystal clear.

Fuji-viewing bench in late autumn
After climbing up Kassen Ridge and passing several benches, we finally arrived at Fujimi Bench. Since it's called Fujimi, you might think you can see Mt. Fuji, but there was hardly any view. Although there are only a few benches, it is an important rest point, so take a good rest and continue climbing.

Second bench at Kassen Ridge
About an hour after starting to climb Kassen Ridge, we arrived at the second bench. For many people, this will be their first resting point. The Kassen Hut lift cable is nearby, so if you're lucky, you can see the cargo being transported.

Autumn leaves seen on the way up Kassen Ridge
As we climbed the Kassen Ridge, the altitude increased and the surrounding mountains became clearly visible through the gaps. In addition to the snow-covered mountains being truly beautiful, we were still at an altitude where the autumn leaves could be seen, so we were able to see a mysterious seasonal view of the two coexisting.

Dolphin Rock on Mount Tsubaki
Mt. Tsubakuro is famous for its strangely shaped rocks, large and small, but the most famous of them all is probably Dolphin Rock. This rock, located on the road from Tsubame Sanso to Mt. Tsubakuro, is known for its shape resembling a dolphin's head, and many people take commemorative photos here.

Nakabusa Onsen trailhead in the morning
This is the Nakabusa Onsen trailhead, a major base for climbing Mt. Tsurugidake. Many climbers start their climb from Nakabusa Onsen. There are large toilets, so it's a good place to get ready. It was the perfect season, so we were able to see beautiful autumn leaves illuminated by the morning light.

Autumn foliage of Kassen Ridge from Nakabusa Onsen
As I started climbing from Nakabusa Onsen towards Mt. Tsubakuro, I was suddenly met with some very beautiful autumn foliage. The golden leaves of the trees created a ceiling that I found myself entranced by. I almost forgot that there was a climb ahead.

The first bench at Kassen Ridge
About 30 minutes after starting the climb from Nakabusa Onsen, we arrived at the first bench. However, it is too close to the trailhead, so not many people seem to take a break here. However, there are still autumn leaves around here, so it seems nice to enjoy the scenery for a bit.

Battle Ridge Third Bench
There are benches at key points on Kassen Ridge, and this is the third of them all. Little by little, the sky and the world below become visible through the trees, and you realize that you are steadily gaining altitude. Although it is only a little, you can also see traces of snowfall.

Kassen Ridge to Kassen Hut
After passing Fujimi-daira Bench, the view gradually improves. Looking ahead, you can see the top of Mt. Yari, and looking behind you, you can see the Matsumoto Basin, which you could see occasionally. Although it's only a little at a time, snow is piling up in places, and you can feel that you are definitely gaining altitude.

Halloween decorations at the Battle Cottage
Perhaps because we visited close to Halloween, the inside of the Kassen hut was decorated for Halloween. As expected, since it's on top of a mountain, it wasn't full-scale, but the cute, handmade-looking decorations still welcomed the climbers.

Snow-covered battle hut
Kassengoya is located in the latter half of Kassen Ridge. This hut is famous for being able to serve watermelon in the summer, but in this season you can also enjoy warm udon noodles, pork soup, and sweet red bean soup. There is also a toilet, so we recommend taking a long break here before starting the final climb.

View of the climb from Kassengoya
After passing Kassengoya, you leave the forest and the view becomes even more amazing. You can now see the lower world and other mountains that you could only see through the trees. The clear sky is so close that your excitement for the climb increases.

Snow Battle at Sawano-gashira
This is Kassenzawano-gashira, the last rest point on Kassen Ridge. If you come here, Mt. Tsurugidake and Tsurugi Sanso are right in front of you. In fact, you can already see them. When I visited this time, the snow started to accumulate in earnest from here, so many people put on crampons here (those who didn't were putting them on at Kassen Hut below). If you're lucky, you might see a ptarmigan.

Mount Tsurugi in late autumn
Mt. Tsubakuro is known as the Queen of the Northern Alps, and has a beautiful and slightly unusual shape. It is also known as a mountain for beginner climbers, and is crowded with many climbers during the season. Even in late autumn, right at the end of the season, there were many climbers.

View from the summit of Mt. Tsubakuro in late autumn
Mount Tsubakuro, also known as the Queen of the Northern Alps, has a very distinctive shape with exposed round rocks. It was named after the shape of a swallow, which is said to be the shape of a swallow. From the summit in this season, you can get a panoramic view of the Hotaka peaks, lightly covered in snow. There is something mysterious about this view, with the Hotaka mountain range and the cityscape on the other side.

Dinner at Enzanso
When you hear about mountain hut food, you tend to imagine it being small in portion size, bland in flavor, and not as good as what you get down there... but mountain huts these days are amazing, and in some cases you can get food that tastes as good or even better than what you get in a restaurant down there, and looks good too. I never thought I'd be able to get cheese-stuffed hamburger on the mountain. It tastes amazing, too.

Chogatake in late autumn
There are many famous peaks in the Northern Alps, but Chogatake is probably the best in terms of being able to see the Hotaka mountains right before your eyes. This time, I visited in late autumn when the snow was piling up. The scenery is a strange mix of autumn leaves and snow, but the spectacular Hotaka mountain range is right before your eyes. It's an addictive view.

Japan Alps Cycling Tour - Daio Wasabi Farm
#MarchGoodPlaces2025
There is a Daio Wasabi Farm in Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture. The farm is located in the suburban town of Hotakahei and is the largest farm product in Japan. The farm has a historic and quaint waterwheel, especially the raft of the waterwheel is very eye-catching. The waterwheel is available throughout the spring and summer, and the mobile waterwheel is a popular photo spot for visitors to the farm.
You can rent a bicycle near Hotaka Station and go there. In addition to enjoying the pastoral scenery, you can also see the snow-covered Alpine peaks along the way while riding your bicycle. If it is the season for wasabi to grow, you will see wasabi all over the garden. We visited during the cherry blossom season, and the cherry blossoms along the way were in full bloom, welcoming us. It can make up for the slight disappointment of not seeing the garden full of wasabi.
Visitors can try wasabi-related foods such as wasabi soba, wasabi tempura, wasabi ice cream and wasabi beer to challenge and explore their taste buds.
The largest wasabi farm in Japan, "Daioh Wasabi Farm"
Nagano Prefecture is number one in the nation for wasabi production!
Azumino is famous for its wasabi production, and about 90% of the wasabi in Nagano Prefecture is this type of wasabi.
Wasabi has a very spicy image, but fresh wasabi wasn't very spicy!
The Daio Wasabi Farm is so big, it's the size of more than 10 Tokyo Domes✨✨
At the Daio Wasabi Farm, you can enjoy wasabi, including wasabi soft serve!

A popular soba restaurant in Azumino
A popular soba restaurant in Azumino! I went there before 12 o'clock on the weekend, and I was able to get in easily.
Sometimes there is a queue, but the turnover is fast.
There are table seats and tatami seating.
The menu includes cold soba, hot soba, and other snacks such as shrimp, stewed offal, mushrooms, wild vegetables, and oden.
Zaru soba 650 yen
Half zaru 450 yen
Large portion is 930 yen...
The amount is amazing for such a low price! I think even the half zaru is more than a normal portion for one person.
I ordered Zaru soba, but it became too bitter for me and I had to force myself to finish it, so half zaru might be just right for women.
The handmade noodles are delicious and easy to swallow.
The stewed offal is also delicious and has no odor, but it is quite strongly seasoned.
You can change to a large portion for +120 yen or a half portion for -180 yen.
It's cheap, delicious, and easy to see why it's so popular.
