Old streets and cobblestones wind through the narrowed spaces between the tilted buildings of a town built into the hills of this river valley, by day seeming like a city pulled from its ancient time. By night, fluorescent colored lights outline the historic bridges and houses, turning it into a glittering modern glory. Every other shop is a snack stall or costume shop for tourists to enjoy. Yet in the early mornings you can still watch locals beating laundry at the river's edge to clean it, while on one of the bridge posts perches a basket of shredded apples to dry in the sun. A crowd of hawkers try to sell you photos at the step-stone bridge. And you can follow an elderly local with vegetables in a basket nearly the size of herself through the alleys of the old town. Normal life seems to happen as usual alongside the tourist attractions, offering a glimpse into how life happens beyond what you see in museums or books. You don't need more than a couple of days to explore the ancient town area itself, but I took a bit longer and enjoyed Fenghuang very much. If you're looking for a place that's easy to get to, isn't overrun with people, and has an old-world charm, then Fenghuang is a great place to try. Fenghuang Ancient Village is an ancient village in Hunan Province. We came by ourselves with our family, took the high-speed train from Changsha for about 2-3 hours. We traveled to Fenghuang by calling a taxi at the charter station. The fare was about 50 yuan for 6 people. The atmosphere in the city during the day is quiet, but at night it is very lively and full of Chinese and foreigners who dress in Chinese national costumes to take pictures.
