#January2025 Akrotiri is a Cycladic Bronze Age settlement on the Greek volcanic island of Santorini (Thera). The name comes from the nearby village of Akrotiri. In 1967, archaeologist Spyridon Marinatos discovered a Cycladic city with strong Minoan influence. The city was buried by the Minoan eruption during its heyday, thus remaining intact for more than 3,500 years until it was excavated in the 20th and 21st centuries. The preserved buildings and murals fully reflect the society, economy and culture of the Aegean civilization in the Bronze Age. The excavation site was named after the present-day village of Akrotiri. It is located approximately 700 metres northwest of the excavation site on the island's oldest volcanic rock hill and features the ruins of a castle from the time of the Fourth Crusade.
