If you’re looking for untouched, raw nature that will truly amaze you from the very first glance, then the valleys surrounding Karakol in Kyrgyzstan are exactly where you should be. Of course, places like Altyn Arashan are well-known and absolutely worth visiting.
However, in this review, I would like to highlight another place that many nature lovers may not know about, a place that showcases the wonders of creation in their purest form. I am sharing this based on my experience as a professional photographer who constantly searches for unique locations to capture rare and unforgettable images.
My trip took place in the summer of 2025, along with a photographer friend. We were fortunate enough to find a private local guide who specializes in working with photographers and knows many hidden locations. On one of the days, he took us to a valley near Yeltsin Peak.
This turned out to be one of the most breathtaking places I have seen in Kyrgyzstan. However, reaching it is not easy. The road is completely unpaved, there is no phone signal, and there are no clear access routes; it is truly untouched wilderness.
For that reason, my first advice is
Do not attempt to visit such remote areas without a trained local guide.
Also, I strongly recommend not renting a standard 4x4 car; the roads are extremely rough. On that day, we used an old UAZ off-road vehicle that comes with its own driver, specifically because these cars are built for these harsh mountain tracks. The ride is not comfortable at all, but it is absolutely the most suitable choice.
You can see all of this in the photos I have attached, taken by me personally, to help convey the beauty and authenticity of this experience.
My Key Tips for Travelers:
*Hire a local guide in Karakol; they know places that you won’t find online.
*Consider staying in yurt camps; it allows you to explore more areas and immerse yourself in the local atmosphere.
*These regions are completely remote, with no electricity and no internet. Download your maps before you go.
*The off-road rides are very bumpy if you are prone to motion sickness; travel on an empty stomach and bring any needed medication.
*The weather can be very cold, even in summer. Temperatures may drop to -2 to 5°C at night. Pack warm clothes.
*In the end, the experience is absolutely worth it. The effort, the road, and the cold all fade when you see the landscape in front of you.
