Best Hotels near Stewart Street Reserve, Sydney

During the last four years, I’ve stayed at ‘The Hughie’ on 6 occasions, twice with my wife and with a cricketing mate for the SCG test in January on four occasions. The SCG and SFS are an easy 10 minute stroll away, and buses run into the city and Bondi along Oxford Street every few minutes. The building is full of charm and history, and the rooms have been tastefully renovated and are maintained in spotless condition. The staff are courteous, polite and accomodating.

With all the lockdowns of Covid and everything this past year has brought I have reflected on past travels and been meaning to get back to my reviews. I was here March 2020 with a friend. I had booked two rooms (1 each) and I was disappointed with the receptionist when I approached him about the noise of the room at the front after my first night stay with the idea of asking if I could downgrade my room from the most expensive to one of the smaller ones at the back, but he took everything as personal. His reaction was off the wall, he was so incredibly rude and nasty that I was shaking, I am quite diplomatic but I was surprised, I was thinking 'Do you speak to your Mother like that”, I was floored. My career has been in customer service training, in very difficult cases, this was not difficult and yet he went nuclear. He insisted that they had double glazing. They DO NOT but yes a 2nd pane of glass was added but not true double glazing and it did little to give me a good nights rest. I mentioned that maybe if one was from a big city noise would be no issue, but Im not from Sydney. I hope this person is no longer working for the hotel. He was not a good ambassador for it. I did finally insist on speaking to the manager, which he did not want me to do, who greatly helped with my move. But the scars of this visit, really are still there. My friend never knew about these issues, she arrived the following day, I was not happy to stay here but did so as to move would've caused issue with her. The manager at the time however was professional. Im sure I've seen reviews mentioning this rude staffer but it certainly looks like they are not here now. All I can say is in my experience it was not a good one, and on that I can't recommend it. I have never ever in my decades of traveling been treated by anyone so aggressively, I still fail to understand this entire episode and hope when travel is back I can go to a place where the welcome remains with me for all the right reasons. If this issue had been resolved nicely, calmly like an adult Im sure the rating would be much better..Rooms are small but clean and the back rooms are quieter....

The good - the location is pretty central and the bed was very comfortable. The ride to/from the airport was about 20 minutes and about 50 dollars Aus. We could book the room for one night on the New Years' weekend and it was ＜ $200 US. The rest - Overall, the Kirketon could use an update. The hotel facility was retrofitted into the building and while this can produce a fun and funky (in a good way) experience, the Kirketon is more funky (in not a good way). The lobby and room furnishings are tired and weird (not in a ”hip” way). The windows are FILTHY. I think the room and bathroom were clean but the lighting is not great. There is no lift so be prepared to carry you and all your stuff up the stairs. Our room was strangely laid out so that there was about 1 foot between the bed and wall and we had to lift our suitcases over the bed to get them to the other side where we could put them down. We also basically had to walk sideways to move through that opening. The bathroom was a long, thin (~12 foot x 2 foot - think bowling lane) ”room” with a small sink at the top of the corridor and toilet at the end with the shower jutting back into the main room on the side.

I'll start with the very few cons about this motel and finish with the substantial pros: Cons: This motel looks a bit shabby on the outside, and the furnishings in my room were old particleboard and showed signs of swelling at the edges presumably from Sydney's high humidity. The TV wasn't a smart TV. There was no in-room safe that I could see. Pros: The charge for the room was very reasonable, especially for Australia Day weekend. The bed was comfortable, the sheets and towels clean and changed daily. The room was clean and the bathroom spotless. The included breakfast is (two servings of each if a couple has booked the room): A variety of Kellogg cereal packets (I'm sure you could probably request specific types if you want), milk, two slices of white bread, butter and jam. My room had a toaster, microwave, kettle, kitchen sink and dishes, glasses and cutlery. The air conditioning was excellent and modern. My room (ground floor at the back of the parking lot) was remarkably quiet given the motel's location on a main road. The motel also held my bags cheerfully in their office after we had checked out so we could tour around before our flight. There are a limited number of free parking spots for guests (not reserved). The motel is centrally located, five minute walk from shops including a Coles and Aldi, Pharmacy and Edgecliff Metro Station. It's a two minute walk to a bus stop towards Watson's Bay or to the CBD in the other direction. Bottom line: The staff here were very attentive, far beyond the looks of this motel. This is a good value option for people who want to stay along the Bondi line but would prefer not to be at Kings Cross. It was actually cheaper than private rooms in many hostels around town. They do cut corners to keep the price low (old furniture) but it's a good tradeoff. I would definitely stay again. Pro tip: Try to secure a room facing the back of the building to avoid traffic noise.

It was comfortable because it was newly built. First of all, the kitchen facilities are cleaned, but due to the nature of the hostel, they are not very clean. There is only one refrigerator and it is very small. There is no space to do laundry. I understood it because it was a recently built space. There was no air conditioning in the room so I almost died from the heat. I finally started playing through inquiries. I don't know if they make the bed in the room or not. Even before it's organized, people come in to check in and use the space they used right away. Hygiene seemed to be okay though. It smelled a bit like paint. And they said the key deposit in the beginning I received an additional $45 on top of the original amount. I was shocked to hear that I had to write a review to get it back. I wrote a review but Even though it's been 2 days since I returned home after checking out. That $45 hasn't arrived yet. So, I am editing the review and uploading it again. Even though $45 may seem small, I think everyone knows that it is not a small amount. I think it would be good if you understand this and come here.

Gorgeous room (: I will give them 5 star hotel. Amazing breakfast all staffs friendly and warm welcome dring was nice.

We stayed here in early January and chose it based on its value for money and proximity to the Sydney Cricket Ground (as we went to the cricket). It was a nice walk from our hotel to the SCG, and the hotel itself was lovely - friendly staff, clean room and yummy breakfast on offer. I'd highly recommend for those on a budget as this hotel has everything you need. We didn't check out the busy Greek restaurant adjacent, that's for another trip!

I’ve noticed aggressive feedback below and I want to advocate this awesome place. I’ve stayed in the room in March and then In June with my partner.I confirm that WiFi requires attention since it’s too too poor but I’m glad that while I was here, the management has been working on that issue. That’s true that Reception isn’t 24/7 but this is Boutique Hotel for people who aren’t familiar with term, it doesn’t mean luxury all inclusive Conrad by Hilton hotel that’s why don’t expect room service, 24/7 front desk service, towel swans and etc. In addition, beautiful and friendly ladies at the reception go extra miles to ensure that you feel comfortable and like at home. The room isn’t big but stylish if you’d like more space go for room with balcony and you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea,which you may find at the reception complimentary, early in the morning looking at the Potts Point. Besides, LOCATION, this is the best,the most convenient location in Sydney! You can walk to Opera House,CBD or get the train to Bondi Beach staying away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Also, Potts Point has a soul and you may be bewitched by the spirit of this area. To sum up, don’t hesitate about the hotel, it’s gem of the area and you can definitely enjoy the time here if you don’t expect more than the hotel positioned itself. P.S. I stayed at the hotel for 2.5 weeks during one of the busiest times in Sydney. The rooms were cleaned daily. The staff exceptional. The manager on duty incredible. I had a few hiccups as any traveller would at any hotel but once mentioned by me to the staff they without hesitation went beyond to ensure my stay was perfect. It isn’t the most glamorous or biggest or even the most sophisticated place but it was perfect for a solo guy like me travelling in Australia for Mardi Gras and site seeing. Other friends of mine ran into numerous problems beyond my challenges at other big chain hotels but this little place kept me going and made me very happy. I’d return anytime. It’s location is perfect for site seeing and a overnight sleep or daytime nap. Thanks to all the staff there that were amazing. See ya again soon I hope!

The location is good, you can walk to the port of the Opera House within three kilometers, and there is a fresh supermarket 50 meters downstairs. Generally speaking, the facilities are okay, and all the routine ones are available. The front desk service is ok, but the room is not cleaned? Are you serious? Is it because I didn't leave a tip? Stayed for three nights and didn't clean it once! It is the only hotel booked during this trip to Australia that does not clean. Stay in his house and prepare your own shampoo.
