We booked two nights in the Duke of Cornwall during a recent trip to Cornwall. I am sorry to say that it was a very disappointing experience. We were welcomed by a very helpful and friendly young lady who showed us where our room was. Once there we noticed that it was very small and very cold. I went down to the bar and asked if they could put the heating on. I was told that it came on at 5 o'clock in the afternoon but they would turn it on straight away. After another hour the radiator in the room and towel rail in the shower room were still cold. I then found that the radiator valves were all closed. I opened them up and the radiator in the room got warm but the one in the bathroom stayed cold. While we were waiting for the room to warm up I tried to access the free WiFi but could not find it. The only way I could get online with it was to go out of the room into the corridor. It worked ok out there but would not work in the room. We had intended to eat in the pub in the evening but once we got down there we found it was full of very noisy locals and was in no way somewhere to spend eating a meal. We decided to go out to eat instead. Once back and into bed we found the two single beds very uncomfortable and although we were far enough away from the, now even noisier, bar the window in the room was constantly banging and being a very old single glazed sash window the traffic on the road outside was fairly noisy too. I managed to stop the banging by tightening up the catch on the window but it wasn't a great nights sleep. In the morning breakfast was a strange experience. No one had told us where breakfast would be served, but after a while we found a room at the back of the pub with a few tables and chairs in it and a small bar. One of the tables had some cutlery and serviettes on it along with some small boxes of cereal. We assumed that must be for us, even though there was no milk, bowls, fruit juice or anything else resembling a breakfast room. We went in and sat down at the table but there was no one about. After a short while a couple of guys came into the bar and one of them asked us if we would like tea or coffee. We asked for coffee and were brought two cups of what tasted like cheap instant coffee. More waiting in silence until another guy came through a door in the room and asked if we would like a full English breakfast. We both said yes please and after a bit of a wait he returned with two plates containing our breakfasts. No offer of any juices, or milk for the cereal, or anything else. While we were eating the fairly average breakfast the guy from what we assumed was the kitchen came back out with another guy. They both had coats on and disappeared out of the pub. After breakfast we both decided we didn't want to spend another night in the Duke of Cornwall, so we booked a room at a nearby Premier Inn, packed up and put everything in the car. I tried to find someone to give the room keys to and explain that we weren't happy staying

The rooms looks like they been updated.. the clean , good size & fairly big bathroom. Breakfast is good.. cooked english breakfast.. free carpark. The pub itself needs updating & looking a bit rundown.. No food is on offer apart from breakfast. The surrounding area looks very rundown too. The good thing is its 15 minute walk to Charlestown which is very nice..

Great value. Lovely welcome by staff. Room lovely & clean and more than adequate with tea, coffee, shower accessories. Good quality towels. Sound proofing not good due to other residents coming & going & loud TVs so if you are a light sleeper maybe use ear plugs! Breakfast served between 8.30 & 9.30 with the usual cereal, juice & full English. Evening meals not offered as advertised but plenty of takeaways nearby & you can eat them in the pub lounge & they will give you crockery & cutlery to use. A 15 minutes walk down the hill to Charlestown offers options for food. Walk back up hill not too strenuous!

Such a gem of a find, I was wary of booking after looking at reviews, but I couldn't be more happy that I went with it, the staff were friendly and helpful on arrival, a lovely clean room and bathroom, absolutely spotless, it very obviously has been improved and decorated recently, and wow what a job they have done !, The breakfast is freshly cooked and tasty, the locals are friendly, I really can't fault it, we would be very happy to stay there again

We chose the Duke Cornwall as we were down for a wedding and it suited us geographically. Having seen reviews and pictures on *********** we didn't expect much but couldn't have been more wrong! From arrival the staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful and our room was great, clean, spacious and comfortable. The breakfast was lovely too. I would definately recommend and thanks to all the staff for making us so welcome.
