My partner and I recently enjoyed a delightful 3-night stay at Hotel Axis in Viana do Castelo. Hotel with good general facilities, but offers a basic service at all levels. Poor breakfast, delay in repair, a clear lack of people in the room for repair and to meet customer requests. The family room we stayed was awful, horrible cleaning there were places that were no longer cleaned (if it was cleaned) the photos show the dirt of the room .... deteriorated walls, the barriers to the protection of the upper beds they were unsuitable and whenever the children were standing up everyone was awake with the noise ..... Clearly there is a lack of brine from the managers in the maintenance of infrastructure, Some staff appear to have no training to deal with people, if you are looking for sympathy choose another hotel.

The hotel is located on a hilltop with an estimated altitude of around 300. It is convenient to have a car. The nearby churches and scenery are very worthy of appreciation. If there are no children, try climbing to the town centre. Hotel service and breakfast are good.

Had the room all to myself. It's a really modern property overlooking the sea /river. The breakfast was excellent as ever. Great stop off between Porto and Santiago de Compostela. Sadly only two trains per day!

This was a nice little boutique hotel right near the historic center. We were always greeted with a smile and treated kindly. I shared a room with my son and the twin beds were more than adequate. Bathroom is on the small side but it was fine for our needs. The hotel is a little older but the elevator worked great and the entire property was well kept and clean. My only caveat was there there was no outdoor seating area, you have to wear a swim cap and water shoes for the pool and the pool was indoors in a very hot room. The continental style breakfast buffet was good and provided lots of variety. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would stay here again!

I spent a splendid few days at this fabulous and unique hotel in Viana do Castelo with my sister. Based in an old chocolate factory this hotel is designed all around the concept of chocolate. The rooms are themed; we stayed in Roca, which is a name used for the areas where the cacao is grown and harvested. It came with a small balcony with chairs and table which was nice. The staff where all really helpful and kind, and worked around our needs specifically at breakfast with my sister having a couple of allergy requirements and myself needing different times due to onward travel and taking part in the Etape Portugal cycle race. The hotel was spotlessly clean and very relaxing, it was nice to sit outside on a few of the evenings and enjoy a tea and cold chocolate drink! Breakfast was served at the tables and was very good with a number of pastries, cake, pancakes, meat, cheese, fruit and a choice of drinks, cereals and much more. We also loved looking around the museum below; all about the history of chocolate with lots of great info and facts and few hands-on elements, like making a drink of the chocolate drink Montezuma used to have 50 of a day, wow! The shop adjacent to the reception has a number of chocolate gifts made on site as well as hand-picked external gifts that are suitable for any chocolate lover! The location was ideal for me taking part in the Etape Portugal as it was only a few minutes walk to the start of the race. It was also very close to the station and all the key restaurants, shops and cultural buildings in the city. Viana do Castelo itself is a wonderful place and the Monte Santa Luzia offers amazing views across the region and out along the coast. Overall it was a fantastic experience and I'd love to return in the future and explore the area more! Thank you for making us feel so welcome.

Casa Melo Alvim is an incredible property, a 500+ year old manor house, fitted out to the highest quality. The best asset for this property is the staff! A big shout out to Rui who greeted us & helped with orientation and then when we were leaving gave us great advice for our forward journey. Perfect stay
