The flat is over 100 years old and it was nice to live in such an authentic Japanese style place. However, the open air bath was not hot enough and it was quite cold to sleep downstairs with futons as the windows did not have good insulation and the heating was not good enough. Overall, it’s a good experience.

The room type is very Japanese-style and the room is large enough, which is very suitable for family travel. Keep choosing next time, you can find izakayas and other restaurants within walking distance. It was quiet at night and the breakfast was delicious.

This place was a dream. The stay was a unique experience, which paired perfectly with experiencing Kyoto for the first time. We were met by a helpful staff member who gave us a run down of the place and amenities. That was followed by a surprise tea ceremony. The location was great, walking distance to restaurants, bars, and cafes. If you’re eager for a long walk, Gion District is a walkable distance too. Great communication- I communicated with staff who responded almost immediately, and when they didn’t hear from me they’d check in. Great value! We plan to return!!

We travelled with three older kids, a little bit of a squeeze for them in the tatami mat room but they loved it. Very clean, well maintained and conveniently located, walking distance from Nishiki and Gion areas. Both outside tub and inside wooden bath were gorgeous and relaxing. Check in was fast and easy and we enjoyed a lovely welcome tea ceremony upon arrival. Would definitely come back and highly recommended.

We spent 2 weeks in Japan, starting work Tokyo, then Osaka, ending in Kyoto. The Machiya experience in Kyoto was perfect. Everything from the communication pre-arrival to the check-in process, to the luxury of the Machiya, we were taken away! We could not recommend this more and we are very lucky and happy to have stayed at this Machiya!

We stayed with our family, total 5 people and this was amazing hotel, it's unforgettable experience. The staff are super nice and friendly, great location and very tasty traditional Japanese breakfast. In addition, it's super helpful that have nearby washer and dryer that you can use.

Kyoto Machiya Fukune is a great place to stay My family of 4 had an amazing time, place is beautiful and service impecable Constantly checking on us and making recommendations for places to visit They also have laundry service which was very helpful

I would not recommend staying at Kyoto Machiya Fukune. The staff is very nice, the tubs are pretty, and the place is clean and well-located. But if I was staying in the area again, I would book an upscale Japanese hotel with a bath instead. It was loud. The tea ceremony was not actually a tea ceremony. Dinner was nicely presented and tasted good, but the parts of it that were intended to be hot were cold. The Japanese style breakfast was great. But still, the overall experience was average — and it is too pricey to justify the expense.
