Bella Vista Motel Fox Glacier

Spent two nights here in Fox, waiting for the weather to clear enough to do the glacier heli trip. Great welcome from Karen at check-in, lovely clean and comfy room with a good shower, tea and coffee.. you have the use of a big bbq and microwave but no facilities in the room for cooking but you are a stones throw from a selection of pubs that have a good choice of food. Some beautiful walks near by.. Minnehaha for glow worms (magical) and Lake Matheson (stunning) Only thirty mins from Franz Josef but it's pretty much the same as Fox with a few more cafés.
The Westhaven Motel

First time staying at The Westhaven Motel. We usually stay down at one of the motels on Cook Flat Road but this time chose to stay in 'town'. Sadly not too many people around Fox Glacier township and a number of businesses have closed. Stayed 2 nights. Room was large. Self catered one night and ate out at the White Pub the next. Did both the classic Lake Matheson walk, and the longer and steeper Lake Gault walk on seperate days (starts off the main Lake Matheson walking track). We would stay again at The Westhaven Motel. Price had reduced than earlier advertised, was very reasonable being $100 pn

This house in Fox, I forgot to take my wallet when I left, and kept it for me for 3 days. I returned from Queenstown to take it again, thank you. There is a super super big kitchen, a lot of tableware, and the proprietress is warm and refreshing. I arrived at noon, and they asked to check in. In fact, I don't recommend it for the entire western route, because the mountain road is not easy to walk. It's better to leave more time to live somewhere for 2 more days, and you can hike without children. This one is also 2 large and 1 small, and it was given 3 single beds. Actually we only used 2 of them. It is a faucet that mixes water~~convenient

We stayed here for two nights and had issues with this place as follows: 1. Arriving at check in an elderly Chinese lady appeared at reception, dialled a number on her phone and pointed to it. I was connected with her son who’s somewhere else and did check in with him by phone….really ?? 2. The first room we were given had no wifi as it was so far away from reception. We asked to be moved, by phone again, and we provided with another room where the wifi worked. 3. The lid on the kettle was broken and fell off when filling. 4. The hot water pressure appears almost non existent and, in the mornings when everyone was showering, there was almost no water coming out of the shower and this morning I got up at 6am to shower early but still almost no pressure and took forever to get hot. 5. The bed was super springy and didn’t feel very much like quality at all. On the upside, there’s plenty of parking as very few people in the motel ( I wonder why ? ) and the motel is close to the Main Street of Fox Glacier. I always review our hotels on our trips and 99% of the time give glowing reviews but this place is having a lend at almost $200 Aud per night. No English speaking, no welcome, no facilities no water pressure and by the looks of it, no guests. You can do much better elsewhere
Te Weheka Boutique Hotel

Fox Glacier is a tiny town with barely a handful of eateries and a lot of tired and old accommodation so aesthetically, Distinction FG stands out. the rooms are a good size and the overall look is like a 3.5 star motel with basic furniture and decor. The included breakfast is pedestrian: hot food selection, condiments and toast, Cornflakes and Vitabrits with milk and bottled juices. throughout NZ, a lot of the customer service roles seem to be filled by travellers on 1-year working holiday visas so who you get and their level of service and ability is all very patchy. The current crew at Distinction FG seem competent and eager but when we checked in, the front desk was unattended at 3pm. We could hear someone out the back swearing and yelling but no one came forward. then we noticed a small sign mentioning that if the desk is unattended, ring the bell. So we did. and we were met with someone who whipped around the corner to look, without making eye contact with us, yell, ”Where the f*&k is she??!!!??” We assumed ”she” was the person who was supposed to be manning the desk. then a young girl appeared from behind us to check us in. Needless to say, her boss/owner disappeared and left the girl to do the menial check-in task. Of course this may have been a one-off incident and and there may be some explanation but I not sure if it's ever appropriate to use that kind of language when guests are standing in front of you, let alone within ear shot.

The hotel is very good. The room was very satisfying, the heating was adequate, and it didn't feel cold in winter. There are also Chinese staff at the front desk. There are restaurants and bars, but they didn't go. The location is very good, next door is the seasons and shops of the two tourist companies, the intercity bus station is also there, very close. The only bad thing is that the room is too poorly soundproofed.
