Aberdour Guest House

We loved our two night stay. Wish it had been longer. Family room, two adults, two 12 year olds, ... big clean room. We loved Dumfries... Amanda's traditional breakfast's are full, heartwarming and tasty. It was a freshly cooked breakfast, to order and toast brought to the table. The hotel is less than a ten minute walk to the centre of Dumfries, and there was a so much to do from that starting point. We did lots shopping on the first day as we humoured the girls, .. lots of museums, history and churches on the second day... third day we chilled. Stupidly didn't take many photos as we were busy enjoying ourselves...especially kicking myself for not getting photos at St Michael's...that is one of the most impressive graveyards I have ever visited. The Aberdour is a grand place to stay, loved it. Dumfries is incredible... especially the staff and volunteers in the museum's and visitor attractions. Our favourites were the two smallest... Burns House and Old Bridge House Museum...closely followed by the Graveyard. The shower could have done with a new hose and the head bleached. Was dripping and didn't look sparkly. Needed to address the elephant in the room. Personally I would book before Amanda gets the plumber in... then the hotel will be perfect. There are still good deals available.... but I suspect not for long. Xx
Dumfries Villa

Two night stay here. A minute from Dumfries Railway Station and near the town centre this is a good choice for a short stay in the town. Check in was easy, our room was comfortable, although it could probably do with a bit of redecorating. It was clean though and well equipped. The en suite bathroom was very small, but everything that we needed. Breakfast was ordered the night before and it was excellent. Full Scottish breakfast, with a choice of cereals, yoghurt and tea , coffee and fruit juice. Overall a good place to stay at a reasonable cost. Would recommend it.
White Hart Hotel

Yes the hotel looks dated and the area is down by the River but the welcome is genuine and the owner and staff are very attentive. The breakfast as others have noted is very very good indeed. The Inn is old and the rooms reflect this but it was warm clean and the bed was super with lovely pillows and a vicious shower!! I slept so well and was not disturbed by the musician but heard the seagulls. The pub stays open late but thats fine as it appears quite usual in Dumfries and perhaps Scotland in general. A lovely stay and one i hope to repeat very soon. Thank you to the owner for her welcome.
Glenlossie Guest House

Ten years ago, we stayed at the Glenlossie and it was one of the best B&Bs we've ever experienced in Scotland. I gave it top marks on Trip Advisor and that's a rarity! The owners were friendly, the breakfast was superb and the place had a professional and business-like air about it. So, thinking we'd head to D&G for a few days recently we thought to book again. In the interim the place has been taken over by the larger Caledonian Hotel next door and is now effectively an annexe. It goes without saying that the former ambience of the establishment is dead and gone. There was litter in the car park and old chairs and junk in the passage outside our ground floor bedroom window which we couldn't open for long because of the cigarette smoke emanating from who knows who although the constant coughing through the thin wall would suggest our neighbour was the culprit. The bathroom ceiling was peeling, probably due to the lack of an extractor and the sink lacked a plug. We bought one in a shop. To be fair, the room was attended to every day and coffee/tea/soap etc replenished (not the plug). You get the feeling no one is around to ”manage” the place. The front door is always on the snib. Mail lay about the porch uncollected. Breakfasts are now served at the big house and that's it. The buffet is average and the porridge wouldn't win an Oscar nomination any longer. It's a shame as the young East European lassies in charge are doing their best. I know covid has hit the hotel trade hard. Staff shortages are a common feature now and it's a wonder that places like this can stay open at all. in the Caledonian's case the funeral trade keeps them going, I gather. Good luck to them. But I think the use of the name Glenlossie for the ghostly building next door is a bit of a nonsense and quite sad in the circumstances.
