Let’s start with the facts, in European and North American ratings this would never reach the dizzying heights of a four star hotel. Not so much faded elegance as disintegrating. Rooms were old and in desperate need of refurbishment and this was the case throughout most of the public areas within this facility. I am sure this hotel was the ‘Place to be seen’ at one time but now it’s a shadow of its former palatial self and it’s a sad sight to behold? Customer service not up to its star rating in fact far from the standard one would expect even in an hotel of lesser quality. Attended for breakfast one morning to be told the breakfast room was full. It most certainly was not and was reserved for guests. Now we had booked in for 11 nights and as far as I am aware we’re the longest serving customers during our time there. We were advised to use the makeshift facility in the adjoining room. This consisted at that time of a choice of scrambled egg and watery fruit juice of indeterminate flavour. They had been busy with a large number of guests and had exhausted their supplies. Incidentally only once did we receive toast for breakfast and twice received yogurt drink in spite of this being my menu choice for the entire stay. I prefer a service where waiting staff are noticeable by their reserved service, here they ounce as soon as you out your cutlery down and dished out the hot courses at breakfast before we had finished our fruit plate. We got the impression that guest are an inconvenience and need to be dealt with swiftly. One day our air conditioning unit within our room gave up the ghost and we reported this to main reception. With daytime temps in the 30’s it’s an understandable necessity. We can’t thanks the hall porter enough who took it upon himself to secure us another room and return to us our comfort. When packing in the early hours of the morning for our flight we noticed we had a visitor. A bedbug crawling across the sheet. We had thought our skin irritations were mosquito induced but now it seems clear that this was not the case. Have to give a shout out to the cleaning staff who did all they could battling against the tide of neglect to keep the rooms looking as good as they could. And always has a cheery greeting for guests no matter what the time of the day or pressure of their duties. Sad to say that I will inevitably return to Colombia as I frequently do I cannot foresee a time when I will return to this ‘Malestic’hotel. And that saddens me greatly as it could be a true jewel of tourism with a little care and respect.
