Mount Meru Game Lodge

I stayed at MMGL on the last night of a 3-week trip to Tanzania. The staff were so kind, helpful, and friendly. Ameema in the office assisted me in organzing a last-minute half day trip in nearby Arusha National Park, and the co-owner Harry was also very encouraging and helpful. Their box lunch was the best I had of all the safari days. If the wait staff saw you once, they’d recognize you and treat you like a friend from that time on. I felt very taken care of. The place has a distinct historic feel, and the room had some of that atmosphere (such as old light switches); it felt a bit like home. The room was spacious with a nice view of the pond. It didn’t have air conditioning, but the fan was sufficient (& it wasn't that hot in November). The lodge grounds are beautiful, and it was fun to see the water buffalo. The food was delicious (chicken schwarma for dinner). In the trees and on the roof of the cottage, monkeys cavorted around—that was an entertaining send-off on my last evening in Tanzania!

This is the best Safari Lodge experience. All the comforts with the authenticity that any traveller to Tanzania would want. A focus on conservation with native animals and mature plants and trees all around with a big sky and fire pit at night. Totally fabulous staff that are proud to look after you and share their cultural heritage.

There is just something magical about feeling like you are in a rainforest but also at home. What a luxury seeing the Waterbuffalo's, hearing the Colobus Monkeys and watching the river rush by while having a great time with family and friends. Thank You Team!

We loved our stay at this beautiful, peaceful lodge from the moment of the warm welcome. Mount Meru does feel like a sanctuary - a place to rejuvenate and relax. We enjoyed the sumptuous meals under the mango trees - and listening to monkeys calling while we ate breakfast was an added delight! The interlinked family bedrooms (with a door between that can stand open if needed) are perfect for families and the beds are huge and luxuriously comfortable. The pool is refreshing and I could happily laze there for hours listening to birdsong and monkey chatter! A highlight for me and my daughter was horse riding from a local farm where we saw zebra, kudu, impala, eland and more. (this wasn’t part of the lodge but kindly arranged by them). Another was our guided walking tour of Usa-river by a member of the lodge staff. The staff are wonderfully kind and accommodating - really felt like nothing was too much to ask. We left refreshed and ready for a busy onward trip- and all keen to return very soon! Thank you!

We arrived at Mount Meru Game Lodge after three days’ safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. After a long day on tracks and roads we pulled into the Lodge at dusk: we could not have imagined a more heavenly oasis! We were greeted by friendly and welcoming staff who attended to us immediately. We were offered welcome drinks in a reception which owing to the beautiful decor and photographs on the wall makes you feel as if you are stepping back in time. The ancient trees filled with monkeys by day, drape over a huge warming fire pit and the sounds of the Lodge’s lake’s many musical inhabitants accompany the guests during their delicious meals. The rooms in Mount Meru Game Lodge offered us the best showers (with lovely scented shower gel and shampoo) and by far the best beds we experienced of any of the lodges we stayed in - much needed after our safari. Our rooms were beautifully clean, well-proportioned and easily accessible. Some of us took the opportunity to have lovely massages in our rooms too. Every meal, including the lunch box provided for our day out, was absolutely delicious. I also feel it’s important to say this lodge offered the best coffee I had anywhere during our travels in Tanzania (my favourite being a wonderful frothy cappuccino and my daughter’s was the iced coffee)! Mount Meru Game Lodge has a feeling of being home from home: it is family friendly and the relaxed secure atmosphere meant our children loved roaming the grounds, they would head up to the restaurant area or down to the pool by themselves and especially loved the boardwalk-style track around the lake to see the zonkeys, bird life and water buffalo. The grounds are serene and beautiful, the interiors are stylish yet understated; you feel relaxed and comfortable from the moment you arrive and if you are anything like us you won’t want to leave!

Perfect place to stay before / after Kili or Safari. Near the airport(s). Comfiest beds - asked where I could get the mattress! Cooling pool, warm fire pit of an evening, good food with wide choice, lush gardens with monkeys, zonkeys, exotic birds & water buffalo. Very friendly staff. We stayed 3 nights & took the village tour, a mountain bike ride, 1/2 day trip to natural hot springs (see photos) & a massage in our room. Thoroughly recommend Mount Meru to families exploring wider Arusha area or for stopovers - family sized rooms available. Really good lunch boxes on request for your onward journey. Reception helps arrange all the activities & speaks great English. Founded in 1959 by a famous conservationist the heritage & history of the lodge adds to the authenticity & sense of adventure as a gateway to Tanzania. Property very well lit for night arrivals. Airport pick up arranged by Meru a good English speaker and new van.
