The Sun Inn at Hook Norton

It wouldn’t take much to make this place good. The pub itself is nice and the food good. The accommodation could be better however. When we went to check-in, we arrived 20 minutes early. Instead of politely being told our room wasn’t quite ready and we would be welcome to sit outside in the afternoon sun, we were abruptly told “rooms aren’t ready until 4, come back then”. In fact, in general we didn’t find the staff particularly friendly during our stay. The room itself was fine, nothing fancy, but enough for what we needed. The bathroom was slightly odd, money had obviously been spent on it, which made it strange that some things seemed like they hadn’t been replaced, the bath panel was extremely tatty and the choice of flooring despite being grippy looked, perhaps was dirty. The main area for improvement however is the entrance/exit when the pub is closed. It wouldn’t cost much to improve this. Currently having to navigate the old mops, drying rubber mats and buckets with strange contents in, isn’t the most welcoming, neither is the makeshift cardboard doormat. We were also unable to get a WiFi signal in our room, which although wasn't an issue for us, I can see it being a major issue for other families. The breakfast was a welcome bonus and the continental selection left in the room and the downstairs fridge was generous. Eating it the room was slightly challenging especially with young children. We enjoyed our stay despite the feedback provided, which is meant to be constructive. 3.5 stars would be a fair reflection in my opinion.

A overall great night away in Banbury. Hotel staff were 5* and the breakfast was good. The only complaint was I would of rather spent a few more pounds a night for a more modern room. Although spotless the bathroom has rust by the taps. Tiles were dated as were fittings and bedroom decor was tired and not cosy. This was a middle spec room not a basic and would of expected better. However staff and food made up for some of it.

DANGER TO HEALTH Do not expect to sleep in this property until the person in the room above decides to go to bed, the floor creaking is unbelievable. We were lucky to get 4 hours sleep. At 12.30am I had to go and knock their door and explain we were unable to sleep due to their constant running around they did not stop immediately and started again very early. A cursory 'sorry' regarding the upstairs tenant did not really cut it from the owner next morning. While I appreciate it was beyond their control the room rented to us was for sleeping in and was obviously not fit for purpose. While it is no longer a legal requirement to PAT test electrical items we noted the kettle and TV had not been done 1) at all and 2) since 2021, however, IT IS a legal requirement to clean and descale a shower head at least quarterly. We felt unable to use the shower due to the state of its head as it can lead to Legionnaires' disease. A bath? not a good option since on lifting the rubber bathmat various and multiple patches of mould were visible. The light switches in the bedroom and paintwork on the inside of the bathroom door were filthy. The breakfast (which we did not have) sounded very mean for the price, the broadband is apparently VERY iffy due to the width of the stone walls and the write up in the room reads like Faulty Towers. The location is excellent but the accommodation is over priced for its quality. Having run rental accommodation ourselves for many years we speak from experience.

Our room was spotlessly clean and looked like it had been recently decorated. It was a lovely room and we couldn't find fault with it. Had a meal and drinks in the pub. It provides typical pub meals. Very friendly staff. Great location being only 5 minutes walk from the centre of town.

The hotel hosted a Christening Party for 50 and this was a fantastic day. Tina and her team were brilliant making sure we had everything we needed. Staff were friendly ,helpful and smiley and feedback from everyone was positive. It was helpful having a safe enclosed garden which the children could play in and be totally supervised by their parents. The food was lovely and the room beautifully cleaned thanks to Jade and she is an asset to the team. Lily helped with the flower arrangements and was so helpful. Tina GM oversaw everything and delivered a brilliant experience with charm and efficiency. The waiting and bar staff were good and worked quickly to replenish food and drinks.
