This is a commemorative exhibition for the 120th anniversary of the birth of Tatsuaki Kuroda (1904-1982), a wood lacquer artist who was active from before the war to after the war.
Kuroda, who had no specific teacher but sought the path of lacquer art through classical research both in Japan and abroad, is known for his sculptural ability and his skill in a variety of techniques. He was mentored by Muneyoshi Yanagi, whom he met through Kanjiro Kawai, and participated in the Kamigamo Mingei Association and played a part in the Mingei movement. Kuroda's fortunate friendships with Yasunari Kawabata, Naoya Shiga, Masako Shirasu, and Saneatsu Mushanokoji also enriched his creative activities. He also questioned the traditional division of labor in lacquer art, and chose to work in an integrated manner, from selecting materials to creating wooden supports, which is said to have given Kuroda a bold, powerful and unique style that was loved by many literati and connoisseurs. Kuroda, who left his unique mark on the history of crafts with his high level of skill and sculptural ability, was the first person in the field of woodwork to be recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) in 1970.
In addition to Kuroda's representative works from his early period to his later years, featuring lustrous paintwork, bold shapes created by curves and twists, and mother-of-pearl inlay that opened up new horizons with yam (Mexican abalone), the exhibition also features drawings and materials. From large-scale pieces such as furniture to masterpieces that can be admired in the palm of your hand, the diverse works will allow you to get to the heart of Tatsuaki Kuroda's world of work.
