Join the exciting generative workshop "Writing the Surreal and the Strange" with renowned poet Jose Hernandez Diaz at the Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center in Los Angeles on February 17, 2024. In this workshop, participants will delve into the works of esteemed poets such as James Tate, Marosa di Giorgio, Shivani Mehta, and Will Alexander, who have mastered the art of the surreal and the strange. Through close readings and discussions, attendees will explore these established masters and receive surreal and strange prompts to inspire their own innovative writing.

The workshop facilitator, Jose Hernandez Diaz, a distinguished poet and 2017 NEA Poetry Fellow, will guide participants by sharing his own work in response to the prompts, providing valuable guidance and inspiration. Throughout the workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to draft 2-5 poems, allowing for creative exploration and growth.

Jose Hernandez Diaz is an accomplished author, with notable works including The Fire Eater (Texas Review Press, 2020), Bad Mexican, Bad American (Acre Books, 2024), and The Parachutist (Sundress Publications, 2025). He is highly regarded in the literary community and teaches generative workshops for esteemed organizations such as Hugo House, Lighthouse Writers Workshops, and The Writer's Center.

Please note that masks are encouraged for all attendees while inside the center. Additionally, Beyond Baroque offers a scholarship opportunity for a QTPOC/BIPOC L.A. resident who wishes to participate but may not have the means to do so.
