One of the world’s greatest novelists, Tolstoy explored profound questions of life, death, and love which far transcend their setting in 1870s imperial Russia. He is an exciting writer whose works reflect events in his own turbulent life and whose social activism is just as relevant for our times as it was for his contemporaries. Rosamund Bartlett is a well-known authority on Russian literature, art and music.
