Southeastern hardwood management is often conducted under the detrimental philosophies of “clearcut it and see what comes back” or high-grading, where the most valuable stems are removed, resulting in low-quality residual stands. This tour will focus on the importance of mid-rotation stand management to maximize growth on crop trees and plan for the development of the next stand through the establishment of adequate advanced regeneration. Enhancing hardwood stands for wildlife and recovering from storm damage will also be discussed.
