The Trail Sustainability Institute is proud to present the Trail School: Intro to Rock Work, a remarkable two-day field course in collaboration with the US Forest Service in Cascade Locks. This course is specifically designed for those interested in rock work for trails in the developing Cascade Locks Trail system. Led by Nathaniel Brodie, the Trails Manager for the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, USFS, this course offers a unique opportunity to learn about rock structures, including ideal rock size and shapes, safe quarrying and transport techniques, and the construction of effective rock walls. Participants will also gain hands-on experience in installing rip rap features and other minor trail armoring. Safety is our utmost priority, and the course will focus on dry-laid walling techniques while providing a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. For those who wish to immerse themselves fully in this experience, camping is available at the Wyeth Campground. Please note that there are no water or bathroom amenities available at this time of year, so prepare accordingly for primitive car camping. Participants are advised to bring rain gear, layers of clothing, waterproof/water-resistant gloves, a hard hat or helmet, safety glasses, a personal first aid kit, water, and snacks.
