Dr Drew Gray, Head of Culture at the University of Northampton (UON), invites you to delve into the intriguing world of one of the most fascinating figures he has encountered during his research on the magistrate courts of late Victorian London. Known as 'Tottie Fay' (a pseudonym), this captivating individual found herself in court on numerous occasions due to her alcohol-related offenses and other misdeeds, resulting in multiple stints in prison. Despite facing such consequences repeatedly, Tottie remained unyielding and unrepentant, capturing the attention of thousands of newspaper readers and even becoming a working-class sensation. Her audacity inspired imitators and even a music hall act. However, Tottie's story goes beyond mere infamy. She played a role in reshaping the way society dealt with individuals like her, defying societal expectations imposed upon women by men. Dr Gray's affinity for Tottie Fay is contagious, and he believes you will find her story equally captivating.
