Discover the postwar Seattle Chinatown depicted in John Okada's renowned novel, "No-No Boy," and delve into the real-life community that inspired it. Join our panel discussion as we explore the imagined world of Okada's novel, alongside the historical context that shaped it. Family historian Shox Tokita will share fascinating stories about the Chinatown hotels managed by Japanese Americans, including three owned by his mother. Former Seattle City Councilmember Dolores Sibonga will offer insights into the experiences of Filipino residents and workers in Chinatown, drawing from her own family's history and the Estigoy Café. Dr. Marie Rose Wong, author of "Building Tradition: Pan-Asian Seattle and Life in the Residential Hotels," will provide a comprehensive examination of the history of single-room occupancy residential hotels in Chinatown and the challenges they currently face. Moderated by Emily Porcincula Lawsin, 4Culture Historic Preservation Program Manager, this panel is a collaboration with University of Washington Press, North American Post, and Chin Music Press. Our esteemed presenters bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the discussion. Frank Abe, guest curator, is a co-editor of the upcoming anthology "The Literature of Japanese American Incarceration" and the lead author of the graphic novel "We Hereby Refuse: Japanese American Resistance to Wartime Incarceration." Shokichi "Shox" Tokita, a Seattle native, shares his personal experiences as a Japanese American who lived in Chinatown during WWII and later served in the USAF. Dr. Marie Rose Wong, a Professor Emerita of Urban Planning and Asian American History, will draw on her extensive research on Chinatown's history and residential hotels. Dolores Dasalla Sibonga, Washington state's first Filipina American female lawyer and former Seattle City Councilmember, will contribute valuable insights into the Filipino community in Chinatown. Emily Porcincula Lawsin, our moderator, is an accomplished historian and writer with a deep connection to the Filipino American community.
