The symposium, titled "The Performance and Politics of Truth," will bring together Foucault's work and performance theory as part of the World Congress, Foucault: 40 Years After. This half-day event aims to explore the intersection of Foucault's ideas with performance practice and theory. While his work has been influential in performance studies, there has been limited direct engagement with his ideas starting from performance. This symposium seeks to address this gap by delving into the question of what it means to seriously consider the "art of government" in Foucault's analysis. By analyzing and examining performance and the performative, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the contemporary politics of truth-telling. The symposium is a collaboration between the Department of Performance Studies and the Center for Research & Study at Tisch School of the Arts, along with the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality. The schedule includes a keynote lecture by Mark D. Jordan, followed by a panel featuring André Lepecki, Ann Pellegrini, and Karen Shimakawa. The event will conclude with a reception.
