The Byrne Project is an exciting text-based public art initiative led by poet Savanah Byrne. This project aims to showcase the power of the sun by using sun exposure to burn words into three panels featuring a town map. Savanah Byrne, a talented student artist, has been commissioned to create these paneled installations in the prominent windows of Historic Downtown Middleborough.

The Office of Economic & Community Development, in collaboration with the Middleborough Cultural Council, has provided funding for this project as part of the Windows Alive initiative. The goal is to enliven the main traffic intersection in the downtown area and spark meaningful conversations about the town's historical and cultural heritage. Additionally, this project aims to highlight the unique identity of Middleborough and employ new workforce development skills within the community.

To take advantage of the windows' lack of ultraviolet protection, stencils will be used to burn the words of the poem onto fabric printed with an old map of Middleborough. The result will be three panels showcasing the poem, which will be revealed on July 29 and on display for four weeks. This exhibition will demonstrate the strength of the sun and the impermanence of towns and plans.

The selection of the exceptional student artist, Savanah Byrne, was made in collaboration with the Middleborough High School Innovation Lab's Coordinator, Tony Chuippi. The art installation, aptly named The Byrne Project, is a clever play on words that references both the artist's name and the sun's power. Arial Hallgren, a museum display designer and Middleborough High School graduate, worked closely with Savanah to ensure the fabrication of the installation aligns with the proposed design.

The Byrne Project is made possible through the support of the Middleborough Cultural Council and the Mass Cultural Council.
