Castile-La Mancha
Guadalajara's origins date back to the Roman period, with the founding of the early center of Arriaca. When the settlement came under Arab rule, it was known as Wad-al-Hayara ("Stone River"), a place name that later evolved into its modern name. In the 12th century, King Alfonso VII granted Guadalajara a charter, and the city's importance as an urban center grew. The charter was later expanded by Kings Fernando III and Alfonso X. However, the greatest historical imprint was undoubtedly left by the Mendoza family, who gained control of Guadalajara in the mid-15th century and brought the city to prominence in the following centuries.
